Question

USB Boot Disk with Network Mapping for Ghost

Asked by: djcolverj

so this is where I am, right now.
I downloaded the image for my usb bootdisk from
http://www.ghostbootdisk.com/index.php?name=Downloads&req=viewdownload&cid=2

I have been trying to modify it to be network mapping.
I almost have it working but I am run into a wall.

when I try to load my NTSTS.dos file, I get an error saying that there is not enough conventional memory.
I tried to add himem.sys and emm386.exe to my config.sis file but I get an error saying that "an extended emmory manager is already installed" and then hangs where I believe its tries to run the emm836.exe.

here is the contents of my config.sys, autoexec.bat and another bat file which is located inside the pci folder in the image provide.

CONFIG.SYS

you can use the device=high on a lot of your files such as
devicehigh=%cdrom%\pci\net\net.EXE USE
The devicehigh= statement directs doe to put things in upper memory, instead of conventional.

You need to go to MDGX site to optimize your files.

Here's one link to show what he can do.

http://www.mdgx.com/mem7.htm

You may need to download the file referenced here as well

http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm

and see if you can find the link to the UMBPCI page as well there.

by: djcolverjPosted on 2009-09-01 at 05:06:04ID: 25230618

@dmarinenko:
devicehigh=%cdrom%\pci\net\net.EXE USE does not work in the bat file, you will get an error saying bad command.

@dbrunton:
I went to the links, and tried out the it suggested for the config.sys by adding the UMBPCI.SYS and the hiram.exe
the umbpci installed correctly, but when it got to the hiram.exe, it stated that there was another xms already installed and do I want to over write. on choosing yes, it gets a pci error on n it proceeds.

in the .bat file, I put the loadhigh in front of the ntsts file, and it just hangs there.

cheers

Try commenting out the line with the hiram.exe and see if that fixes the pci error problem.  Just put a REM at the beginning of the line.

@ dbrunton
no luck, still says that it failed to load ntsts.dos because of insufficient conventional memory

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-09-01 at 11:11:22ID: 25234239

device.com %cdrom%\pci\net\protman.dos /I:%cdrom%\pci\net\%pci0%
device.com %cdrom%\pci\net\dis_pkt.dos
device.com %cdrom%\pci\net\%pci0%\%pci0%.dos
loadhigh device.com %cdrom%\pci\net\NTSTS.DOS
device.com %cdrom%\pci\net\DLSHELP.SYS

Try putting loadhigh before the device.com for the top three lines and see what that does.

Which DOS is being used in this disk?

by: djcolverjPosted on 2009-09-02 at 12:38:29ID: 25244779

typing ver at the dos prompt after booting from the usb(with out ntsts.dos loading)
I get
Windows Millennium [Version 4.90.3000]

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-09-02 at 13:19:14ID: 25245191

That's a lightweight DOS and suitable for the job.

See if you can type mem at the command prompt to display memory configuration.  If not see if you can find the mem util.  That is you'll need one probably from a Windows ME system.

There are a number of possible problems here.  The chipset isn't handling memory properly (low and high) - some chipsets weren't very good at that.  The drivers being loaded are taking too much of low memory which is quite possible.  I've had network drivers hog most of the low memory.

This is a USB stick.  Formatted with what FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32?  And what size capacity?

And would you consider another type of network disk rather than the one you are using now?

by: djcolverjPosted on 2009-09-03 at 06:06:14ID: 25250206

ok so my image did not have mem on it, downloaded the mem.exe file that is compatible for ME (God I love the internet)
ran it and heres what I got
Conventional         Total=636K      used= 226k        free=410k
upper                              32k                    17k                     15k
reserved                           0                       0                           0
extended xms                   1,046,97            516k                   1,046,03

this is a 2gig usb stick, formatted as just FAT
I would used anything that I can get my hands on that would allow me to boot to a network, map a drive. and then I can do what i need to do..

I had made the network mapping boot disk via ghosts boot disk wizard, but when I use the hp usb storage formatting utility, it says it cant find files. ( I think I used pc-dos when creating) I have just made a new bootdisks using ms-dos and see what will happen.

forgot to say, currently working on a ibm t-60 laptop, after i get this usb boot diskworking, I will also need to get it to work with toshiba (m2,m3) and dell laptops

by: djcolverjPosted on 2009-09-03 at 10:56:39ID: 25253126

well.. I ended up dumping that img file from the site.
remade my boot disk usin dos 6 (not using win 95, 98 or me bootdisks)

used the hp utility, made the usb bootable, copied over the required files created by ghostboot wizard for network mapping and all is fine...

I will try to see if i can get it to work with the files under the link and see if that works... but first I need to get another usb drive... dont want to erase what i have done :P
cheers

I run Barts Network disk on a 64 Mb USB stick.  Loaded with all of the network drives  possible.

Just something else to look at.

I use

universal Ghost boot CD modified via The Universal TCP/IP Network

http://www.webs05.com/2007/10/16/how-to-create-a-ghost-boot-cd.html

The Universal TCP/IP Network Bootdisk is a DOS .

Use this for your Boot image on the CD, It handles almost all known NICs.

Set it to map a drive to your ghost server and put the F host.exe in the mapped drive.

Run ghost , and pick your image.
http://www.netbootdisk.com/
Universal Ghost boot CD

The advantage is hat it will run on any NIC transparently.

I hope this helps !
