Question

Installing Windows XP Pro On Compaq CQ60-420us

Asked by: slumbersix

Help!

We just bought a new Compaq CQ60-420US. It comes preloaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. We need to get Windows XP Pro on the machine. Every time we go to install XP we get this error - 0x0000007b (0xf78d2524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I know it has to do with the hard drive being SATA. However, there's no way to change the SATA settings in the bios of the machine. I've looked and could not find the SATA driver online.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Here is an advance troubleshooting guide from M$soft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

My next suggestion would be to look @ Conmaq support and see if other users were having the same problem.  Has there been a hotfix?  Would flashing the bios to a newer version fix this?

It isn't the fact that it is an SATA drive. It is more related to how the BIOS is set with respect to the IDE controller. Everyone sleeping with Microsoft set the IDE controller to AHCI. Some manufactures gave you an option. Anyway ... go in to the setup of the computer. I believe Compaqs are F10 while booting but look on the screen as it is booting and it will tell you what key to press to get in to the BIOS setup.

See if you can find the IDE controller settings. If it set to AHCI change it to to legacy (non AHCI). If you don't have of can't find the option there is an alternative. Get the Matrix Storage Drivers from Intel (AHCI Drivers) here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2101&OSFullName=Windows+XP+Professional*&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21

Save the AHCI drivers to a floppy or USB flash drive and do an "F6 Install" of XP. Press F6 when it tells you to at the bottom of the screen and "Specify Additional Drivers". Point it to the floppy or USB drive and load the AHCI drivers.

slipstream the sata driver into the XP cd, that should do it :

http://www.digitgeek.com/how-to-slipstream-sata-drivers-into-xp-cd/

you can also slipstream all the other other drivers that you need (if vista is still running, check in device management,, or run siw for identifying them : http://www.lemonfiles.com/details.php?progid=9016

The bios is not letting me change the Sata setting.

I've tried slipstreaming with the drivers that have been posted and that has not worked either.

Does the BIOS reflect the the SATA controller is set to AHCI mode? I keep having to emphsize that SATA has no drivers. It is the controller that has the drivers and if the controller is in AHCI mode then you need to download the drivers from Intel (unless Compaq has specfic F6 drivers) for the controller. With the F6 installation of the drivers you should be able to tell very early in the installation process if it recognizes the hard drive.

It gets to a point early on where you select the hard drive and partition you want to install XP on. Do you get that far and is the hard drive recognized?

Jim,

No, the Bios does not reflect that the SATA controller is set to AHCI mode. The BIOS is not even showing anything regarding SATA. In previous laptops we have been able to change the SATA setting but this one does not have that option.

The drivers that I was talking about were the ones you pointed me to. Slipstreamed them into an XP install disc and tried that. Did not work. There's no floppy drive on the laptop and the USB jump drive is not recognized during the setup of Windows.

That tracks. Some let you change the AHCI mode and some don't. I have noticed that some Toshiba's started out with no AHCI option but once they figured out people were ditching Vista and putting XP on they came out with BIOS updates that inclused the AHCI option. You might check to see if that is an option. How far did you get with the installation? Did it recognize the hard drive?

It is deviating from the path but .... you could pick up a copy of Acronis True Image 2009 for $49 bucks and a external USB drive for $70. Make an image of an existing XP notebook and drop the image back down on this new notebook using the Universal Restore option. You can then slip in the AHCI drivers during the Universal Restore. It is a whole different ball game and you might not want to mess with it unless you will be doing a bunch of them but it will work.
