Question

Windows XP installation error

Asked by: explodingtoaster

I'm trying to install Windows XP Home edition SP3 onto a Dell Inspiron 910 netbook. Each time setup finishes loading and is about to advance to the welcome screen, I get a blue screen with this error:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A56524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The drive I'm using is brand new so it can't be a virus. Ubuntu installs perfectly fine onto the system but it refuses to install Windows. I'm using a FEM16GFDL 16GB Super Talent SSD. I've also tried 2 different XP installation discs, both of which resulted in the same error.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think it is because you have not installed the driver for your hard disk during setup;  Windows XP came out far too long ago to have an SSD included in the drivers on the installation CD.  You need to press the F6 function key early in the setup process in order to be able to load the driver for your SSD from a floppy disk.  If you don't have a floppy disk available, even a cheap USB one, then you need to slipstream the driver into the CD.  You can use the free program NLite for this.  See this page:

From what I've heard on forums and such, a lot of people have been able to simply plug in the SSD and install windows. Maybe newer versions of XP include SSD support?
Regardless, where would I be able to find the drivers for it? I looked at the distributor's website (below) and couldn't find any available drivers for my SSD.

Again, the model number is FEM16GFDL and it's manufactured by Super Talent.

in the BIOS, did you disable the AHCI? (or make it compatible)

did you also downlaod Sata Drivers ?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/stop0x0000007b.htm

As per above you can disable AHCI and or you can also change the mode that the hard drive works in - think there is an option for IDE Mode

http://fotos.thoughtreactor.com/JMB36X_RAID_BIOS_User_Guide_v1.2-1.files/image006.jpg

Something similiar to the above 2 linked images where you can get your sata hard drive to operate and work like an IDE drive.

Also if you use nLite you should be able to slip stream your specific motherboards sata drivers with the xp install disc

Also when the xp disc first loads I think you can press F6 to specify which sata drivers / raid drivers you want to use so you may be able to do it that way as well if it gets that far

You have to scroll down the page a bit but it does show you with a step by step guide using screen grabs.

>>> "Ubuntu installs perfectly fine onto the system but it refuses to install Windows" <<<

As a matter of interest is your hard drive currently partitioned and formatted to any particular filing system, or did you use the Ubuntu CD to boot the system and then flatten back to no partitions again?

by: Darr247Posted on 2009-09-10 at 09:55:44ID: 25302091

Download http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R192574.exe

Boot to safe mode (start tapping F8 as soon as the 'press F2 to access Setup' disappears, then choose Safe Mode from the boot menu).

Run the R192574.exe file and let the chipset driver install.

I agree with BillDL's comment he's uses better language,
but  I was wondering if you had Linux or ubuntu onboard it creates it's own MBR and to remove it and install XP you'll need to use the Ubuntu disc delete the partition.
Another question
regarding your xpsp3 is this slipstreamed with xpsp2?
as it's an upgrade to xpsp2.
To install SP3, either Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) must already be installed.
