Question

E:/ not accessible - Incorrect function

Asked by: welsh45sprog

hi experts,

i have this HP Pavilion desktop which for some reason wont allow me to write anything to a cd or dvd. The PC has a DVD-ROM and a DVD+- writer, when ever i try using a program to burn information onto the disc it fails, if i click My Computer and then double click the CD drive i get the following error message:

E:/ is not accessible
Incorrect Function

I have googled this problem and it seems fairly common, but i couldn't find a solution that worked, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

It sounds like it could be your DVD Writer itself have you tried installing your DVD RW in another machine and check if it does the same?
Another option would be to replace the data cable of the DVD RW.
Which 3rd party program do you use to burn the cd`s?

Can you read any other disc from the drive or not?

Try the following steps once :

*  Right-Click on the drive with  the problem
       > Properties
       > Recording Tab
       > then check the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.

hope this helps.

Chances are -- if it worked before -- you drive has failed. Optical drives have really turned into a 'throw away' technology over the past decade. But at least they are cheap to replace :-)

Certain softwares can cause this issue too. If you check out Device Manager ( Start > devmgmt.msc ) and see some yellow exclamation points on your optical drives, you might have a filter driver issue. Random link to fix this issue: http://djlizard.net/2007/04/30/230/

And even though your burner may be shot, you may also still be able to read CDs and DVDs just fine. Optical drives use different lasers for writing/reading. It's ability to produce the particular laser which writes discs is probably broken.

Lastly, if you aren't too savvy with the idea of opening your computer and replacing a DVD burner, you can get an external USB one. They are fairly cheap and its an easy way to back into burning again. Newegg.com is a personal favorite of mine to pickup affordable hardware such as DVD burners.

I have swaped the cd drive with another one and the problem still persists, so i dont think it's the CD drive. I used a program called "Express Burn" it allowed me to add files to the burn process and i was able to start the buring process, but it just said at the end that it failed.

hi darkapple

it will read cd's or dvd's fine, and i have tried that solution but the recording tab isn't there. it doesn't appear.

hi simplyrick

there are no yellow warnings in the device manager.

by: SimplyRickPosted on 2009-09-07 at 02:43:26ID: 25273790

Oh okay, then this probably *is* a filter driver problem.

What you should do is uninstall each burning software -- one by one, restarting your computer after cheap uninstall -- until the problem goes away. Stuff like Express Burn (packet burning software) installs special drivers that can cause issues like this sometimes. It's usually a conflict between two different CD burning applications.

Once you've identified the software causing the issue, reinstall the latest version and see what happens. If the problem comes back, there's either a bug with that software or you have another incompatible CD burning software installed and doesn't want to play nicely with Express Burn.

"after cheap uninstall" = "after each uninstalled".

Hah.

Hi

Have you tried swapping the Data cable

by: darkapplePosted on 2009-09-07 at 03:19:10ID: 25273972

First Go to mycomputer
Right-Click on E:  the drive with  the problem
       Properties
There are four tabs (General | AutoPlay | Hardware | Recording)
       Click Recording
then check the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.

hi guys

@ Darkapple - i have tried your solution, but as i said earlier the recording tab isn't there.

by: BusyChillPosted on 2009-09-08 at 09:48:57ID: 25283730

I suggest reinstalling the operating system, then I suggest you use a free burning program like ImgBurn, which handles pretty much everything and doesn't install any bad drivers.

by: welsh45sprogPosted on 2009-09-09 at 09:12:57ID: 25292759

i would like to avoid re-installiing it if i can, has anyone got any other ideas?

by: BusyChillPosted on 2009-09-09 at 11:07:45ID: 25293957

It's very hard to get rid of malware/viruses completely nowadays, they could have opened more security holes in your system so even if they are removed, future viruses can use the holes to get in.
Atleast they usually leave some traces behind which can't probably be detected.
Atleast that's what I think is possible.
