Using net send in XP.

hello experts,
We have Campus Wide Network to use Internet via satelite.
In my department, some computers are connected using hub and have been provided fixed IP addresses. there in NO LAN otherwise.
can i use net send command to send msg to some other computer in my departmetn.
e.g my IP address is 192.168.96.xxxx and that of my friend is 192.168.96.yyyy then can i use net send command ?

NetSend is now disabled by default - it can be annoying and used for less than productive purposes. You can enable net send (under services in control panel->administratiove tools), but as it uses NetBIOS it will not be routable outside your lan (in most cases)

net send uses the Messenger and Alerter services, which are normally disabled by Service Packs, as they were abused by spammers.  

the format is
net send <IPaddress> "message"

It's blocked in many campus environments as well.  Check with your network admins...

Normally you should be able to send it unless disabled by the network admin. Try sending a test message to all as follows:
net send * hello
If your collegues receive it, then you can use the net sed for individual net nessaging. Otherwise talk to your admin. Vista does not support net send.
