Question

Cannot install Windows Updates KB973815 and 926139.

Asked by: rhavey

I have successfully installed all Windows XP Pro updates except for the Security Update KB973815 and the PowerShell 926139.

I don't particularly care about Powershell, but not installing indicates a problem.  This computer also does not find the Live Essentials updates - no I don't want them, but again it's an indication.

I installed SP3 from the downloaded EXE file, removed some viruses with Malwarebytes, installed many updates individually, tried Dial-a-fix and a couple of batch files that reregister DLLs, and renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Can someone tell me what I have to do to get Windows Update to behave properly?

Can you send the MalwareBytes log to me for reference? Also, download SuperAntiSpyware (www.superantispyware.com) and do a full scan with that and let me know, how your computer behaves after the scan.

Hope it helps.

rhavey--On the Windows Update website, in the left panel, click "Review your update history".  That should provide some info as to why the download did not succeed, including perhaps error codes.
That will make troubleshooting much easier.
You can see there are many possible reasons from these references.

Did you try the failed downloads more than once?  Especially after removing the malware.

Thank you for he advice.  I had never looked at the left side of the Windows Update website.  THe error code was 0x8007f070 for the Power Shell installation.  There was no entry for the security update.  I decided to retry the security update to generate an error code, and it installed.  I went back and tried Power Shell again, and it installed.  I had tried multiple times this morning without success.

SuperAntivirus found a copy of Antivirus2008, some registry entries that I could not make sense of, and some tracking cookies.

I am going to close this thread and accept both solutions - I learned some things and I'm sure that running superantivirus will save some future problems.

THese answers gave me enough information that I was confident that the problem was really fixed.

rhavey--you are welcome!
I do hope you mean SuperAntiSpyware and not SuperAntiVirus.  The latter is likely a malware site itself.
SAS, recommended by warturtle,  is a very capable and well regarded security app.

Hello rhavey,

Why B grade? If the problem was really resolved completely with our suggestions, then maybe we deserve A grade.

by: rhaveyPosted on 2009-09-10 at 17:23:58ID: 25305838

Yes I meant Superantispyware - I keep doing that, and I hope I don't do it with the web site.

The problem largely resolved itself.  Perhaps we need lessons or at least guidelines so rookies like myself can figure out how to assign these things.  I am grateful for the help.

rhavey--I agree it is not easy to find guidelines to the specifics of accepting a Solution.  There used to be a page that told you what the differences between A, B, C, and D might be to help you choose, but I cannot find it anymore.  Perhaps clicking the button "Request Attention" in the box in which you initially posted your problem would get some guidelines.

"The help file is well written, and worth reading in it's entirety"
Can you supply the URL for the Help file itself?
I see nothing on http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp?hi=403 to be able to navigate to a list with links to most of the other Help subjects.
Thanks.

Hi jcimarron,

Sorry for the long delay.

The links are in the Table of Contents in the left sidebars of any page in the help file.

The main help file page is:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp

Does that help?

_alias99 --I really did know about the left hand panel.  Now, for example,  how do I navigate from http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp to the page that discusses not  only A and B grades but also C and D?
