Question

Fastest XP Boot Times Possible

Asked by: -Mirage

I'm about to build about 40 some odd machines for our organization in doing a technology refresh. One of the things I'd like to do in building these new machines is optimize the thing like crazy, and then clone the machines.

Some of the ways I'd like to optimize the machines are:

-Using NLite to preinstall the service packs, ie, drivers, and by adding its corresponding tweaks related to OS performance.
-Using TuneXP to defrag the boot files. (and nothing else)
-Partition the drive using a 4096 allocation size.
-Using BootVIS
-Poking through the Run and RunOnce areas of the registry and removing unnecessary items.
-Poking through the Startup folder, doing the same.
-Adjusting the system for best performance settings under system properties.
-Disable the loading bar during boot.

Hardware wise, I'm using a 7200 RPM SATA hard drive, DDR3 Memory, with a dual core processor, so I think I'm pretty covered there. I'd like to stay focused on software enhancements and settings that can be done. I'm totally open to optimizations that are related to the BIOS. Motherboard = ASRock G43Twins-FullHD, and it uses AMI.

So guys, what am I missing, and what could I do better? Also if you could let me know why you feel its better, that would be a plus. My goal here is to have some insanely fast cold boot times, and for better performance in general.

You could clean and defrag the registry
2 free programs to use
To clean http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
To Defrag http://www.registry-clean.net/free-registry-defrag.htm
Even a new system seems to have a little junk on it

I also grabbed this from here http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Windows-XP-Startup-Faster

Prefetch

   1. Simply browse to the windows folder (Ex: C:\Windows) and under there you should see the prefetch folder. Go into the prefetch folder and delete all the files (Careful! It should look like this c:\windows\prefetch). We need to edit a registry key to tweak it. Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Under this key you should see a value named: EnablePrefetcher

It has 4 possible values:

0 - Disabled : The prefetch system is turned off.

1 - Application : The prefetch only caches applications.

2 - Boot : The prefetch only caches boot system files.

3 - All : The prefetch caches boot, and application files.

We don't want to disable it entirely. This would actually make boot times *longer*. This is because this feature is also used to speed up the loading of boot files. That is why we are going to pick the number 2 option. It allows us to keep the advantage of caching system files, without continually clogging the system up with applications.

Set the value to 2 and reboot.

The 2nd time you boot it should boot much faster. Remember that the side effect is that launching individual applications once windows has loaded will now be slightly slower.

Black Viper Windows XP Configuration (which startup services to disable)

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Do not disable or tweak the Prefetch folder.  See http://lifehacker.com/201453/tweak-windows-prefetch-for-a-faster-startup and the Update 2 comment and the links referenced there.

Defragging is good.  Defragging the page and hive files on bootup is very good.  Go here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx and get PageDefrag and configure it to defrag on bootup.

I've seen BlackViper's guide before, but since these computers are going to be part of a domain, I don't particularly care for that guide. A lot of services that get disabled are ones that play roles in a domain environment.

There seems to be some discrepancy over whether disabling the prefetch folder is good/bad. One thing that goes unmentioned is that the 2nd update comment on dbrunton's entry states "Prefetch files are NOT loaded at Windows startup," but the prefetcher itself has an option to cache boot system files.

That seems like a contradiction. Why would the feature have an option to cache boot files, but another party stating that prefetch files are not loaded on windows startup. Why would they even need to be cached in the first place if they wern't going to be taken advantage of.....during the boot process.

>> "Prefetch files are NOT loaded at Windows startup,"

That should probably be prefetch application files.

Only the files used during boot will be Prefetched from http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html about half way down page.
