Question

HP Laptop 6730S Screen Goes Black

Asked by: Fritch84

Hi Guys,

One of our users has a HP 6730s laptop that was purchased ~4 months ago.  Everything was running fine up until the last month when suddenly (at irregular intervals) the screen will just go black or fuzzy forcing a hard reset.  Sometimes we can go 4 days  without it happening, others it will occur 3 times daily.

I was directed by HP support to the driver page for this particular model to try re-installing the chipset drivers and graphic drivers.  I ran and installed the chipset drivers fine, but the graphic drivers' executable will load and then prompt "machine does not meet minimum requirements."

Is there anything else I can do to solve the problem? Is this a known caveat for this particular model that simply needs replacing? Why don't the graphics drivers install?

Hi

As far as I know this message that you get, normally appears when you try to install a Vista driver on XP and other such cases.
Did you get the drivers from Here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=za&prodNameId=3687786&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3687778&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093
This is all the XP drivers for your laptop.

Otherwise I would suggest you run windows updates on teh machine and then try to install the driver again.

Hi Raiden69,

I'm sure it was the XP version that I downloaded - I'll try downloading again just to be sure.

Regardless, the release date for this driver is before we even bought the laptop - so in theory it should have already been loaded and makes me think that this will achieve nadda.  I'll update you shortly to see if I did accidently download the wrong OS version.

Raiden - same error msg - "computer did not meet minimum requirements to run."

afthab - it's XP Pro, whilst the user is in the office he has the laptop connected to the power outlet with the power settings all set to 'never' for the standby times.

Hi

Since the machine only started giving problems, you could try to run a System Restore.

by: Fritch84Posted on 2009-09-16 at 23:43:25ID: 25353341

afthab - yeah I guess I'll have to contact them again.  I just wanted confirmation that I've exhausted all 'quick-fixes' and didn't overlook anything stupid, like download the wrong drivers.

I'll have to try the system restore tomorrow - it's near closing time here in Sydney.  Thx for your suggestions.

by: afthabPosted on 2009-09-16 at 23:52:41ID: 25353376

Your Always welcome Fritch84, System restore is a good option. that may help you. Laptop is only 4 month old so better contact customer support guys first, they will guide you better. Let us know the status after contacting them.

Have a nice day

The problem is a breakdown in hardware. That is why the drivers do not regognize the graphics chipset. You are going to have to call support again and put a warranty claim in being that the machine is only 4 months old. They are going to have to replace the motherboard.

by: Fritch84Posted on 2009-09-17 at 16:01:23ID: 25361895

avcompinc - :(

Thx - calling HP support.  Will tell you the outcome.

Have you tried backing up your data and using HP build-in recovery tools?

by: Fritch84Posted on 2009-09-17 at 17:18:47ID: 25362273

Steven - No I haven't, but I just got off the phone with HP support then, they advised (after jumping through hoops connecting external monitors etc.) that they'll send a technician out to either replace the graphics chipset or system board.
