Question

BSOD partmgr.sys page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

Asked by: GrBartley

Hi,
My mothers Dell Dimension 3000 is dying... a sad day for us all.
The problem is when booting into XP it takes an age with the Windows Logo and scrolling/loading bar then eventually comes up with a blue screen of death. Great. The error is to do with partmgr.sys and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA or similar.
Now if this install is scuppered, so be it. The trouble is she hasn't been backing up her docs etc (as I've been telling her to for years!) and needs to recover them.

1) Tried the dell drive diagnostics and it came back with:
"Primary IDE Drive 0: St340014A - Fail. Return Code 5"
I can't find anything much about 'Return Code 5'. But I'm guessing this isn't good!!

2) Tried booting into safe mode, hangs at agpcpq.sys (or possibly the ahci drivers which I think are next) and eventually blue screens

3) Tried booting into the repair console of an XP install CD. Asks for Administrator password and won't accept anything (never set up Admin password that I'm aware of anyway)... unfortunately all the work arounds for this seem to need you to be able to boot into windows... ace!

4) Tried booting an Ubuntu live CD, hangs when I try to access the disk or comes up with an error saying the drive is locked for access.

What isn't helping is that the CD drive in the Dell is also dead!! So points 3 & 4 have been tried from my PC having set the first boot device to the Dell IDE drive as opposed to my SATA drives. (when I booted normally with the IDE drive connected, took an age to boot windows and the IDE disk wasn't showing up in device manager or explorer).

To Summarise:
Disk isn't dead, still spins up and tries to load windows but fails with BSOD about partmgr.sys
Safe mode doesn't work
Disk in another PC isn't recognised by windows but is in the BIOS
Ubuntu live CD in other PC can't access disk
XP repair/recovery console needs a password to continue...

Help!!
Thanks,

Gareth

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll give that a shot when I get back from work and see how it goes.

Failing that, any thoughts on how to 'unlock' the drive or work on making it visible in another OS would be appreciated!

Thanks,

G

Your best shot is send the disk to a recovery company, but it comes at a price.

Yeah, that's my last ditch option... but I've been down that road before, when I was travelling in Australia someone unplugged my camera whilst windows was shutting down and killed my memory card with over a month's worth of photos on! At the time I decided to get it recovered and shelled out the AU$250... but since then I've learnt more and have rescued disks/deleted files (with a combination of live cd's and Trinity Rescue Kit) without too much hassle... so I know it's possible, but somethings just not clicking into place with this one!!

Recovery console. If the password is blank, just press enter without typing anything. This is typical for XP Home. If it is Home, ensure you are using a home disk. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA is generally faulty RAM, and this may lead to symptoms such as you describe. Try different RAM first, or boot to a memtest86 disk or use UBCD as suggested above, I think it has a memory test.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your input there. I hadn't really thought about RAM as the first few things I found upon googling partmgr.sys were dead disk related... I'll try swapping the ram out as well.

Will update after I get stuck in again tonight.

Cheers for directing me to this, I managed to clone the disk and recover the documents...
Thanks,

Gareth
