Question

Automating the "Found New Hardware Wizard" for USB devices

Asked by: jonw01

Since upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 3 in our organisation, we've noticed that everytime a generic USB device is plugged in (eg memory stick or standard mouse), the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears.
If you choose to install a driver automatically, everything works fine, but you shouldn't have to do this.
Previously if you plugged a device in, a bubble appeared near the system tray which after a few seconds would display the message "your new hardware is ready to use".
What has happened to cause this change, and how to I get things back to how they were?

Hi
Does that happens in all computers?
Check BIOS to see if the USB 2.0 Host Controler is enabled.

Yes, it happens to all computers (desktops and laptops).
Not all have got USB 2, but on those that have, it is enabled.  Bios settings have also remained unchanged since this problem came to light.

Ram,
I've tried using the tool as suggested, unfortunately to no avail.  WIndows still opens the new hardware wizard.  There's no problem with it finding the drivers location. The problem is, why won't it just do it automatically like it used to?

Is unsigned Drivers are enabled  ?

Try Start -> Control Panel -> System (or Windows Key + Break does same thing) -> Hardware tab -> Driver Signing -> Ignore

Make sure USB legacy support is disabled in BIOS.

The best thing may be to just allow the installation to completer and hopefully be done with it.  It will help to keep the devices plugged into the same USB ports once they are working.

Thanks for all the suggestions above.  I have tried each of these in turn, and unfortunately haven't fixed the problem.

pln1146: This is exactly what we would like to be able to do! Unfortunately the installation does not complete without manual intervention.  We need users to be able to plug usb memoery sticks in, etc and not have to respond to a wizard in order for them to work.

Did you check for  viruses or any spyware infected to your PC..So please upgrade Antivirus and Disconnect your PC from Network and remove the sharing if configured then RUN Full system scan and check may be it works.

Also Download/Install/Upgrade  Spybot Search and Destroy and run in Advanced mode.
And can you Restore your PC with previous Date when it this problem is there.

If not solved then can you Reinstall winxp using repair option.

kadadi v:

All our PCs are regularly re-imaged, so even if there was a virus at some point, there wouldn't be anymore.  Spybot is not something a professional would install on a large network, and reinstalling on a mass scale is completely impracticle.

Your suggestions may be appropriate for a single home PC, but not for this kind of scenario.

by: kadadi_vPosted on 2009-09-23 at 06:49:45ID: 25403005

ok No prob, it means your image having the problem coz all PC having the same wizard message
Or is any third Party application is installed which make any changes in windows registry...may be..?

Can you try on single PC Clean Installation of Winxp Operating system and Motherboard resources and then connect the USB device ( USB Mouse or USB Memory stick)

OR can you check with different Image of Operating system and then check.Yes i know you are in Large organization with number of systems you have ,for testing purpose can you check with clean Winxp Installation or try to restore with different image

Hi
else try this
Go to start, run, write Regedit "press enter"
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath\
See if  it points to %SystemRoot%\inf'
Then delete the file C:\WINDOWS\inf\infcache.1
Windows will restore it.

Hope it helps

NeOXinHuh: thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately that hasn't worked either!

I've decided to just start again and rebuild all our images from scratch.  Unfortunately we will never know what caused the problem, but it will at least sort it out.
