The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. system restore turned off by group policy

I have been having a prolonged struggle to install an HP printer on a HP Win XP computer.  That's probably a different issue, but it provides the context.  After days of this, I decided to use system restore to get back to ground zero.

I got the message that system restore had been turned off by group policy, which should not be true; I have never set such a policy and would not turn off system restore.  The System Restore tab is missing from the System box.

I searching for an answer here, I found this:

Start the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
Navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore
Set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
Right click on My Computer and Select Manage
Navigate to Services and Applications/Services
Navigate to System Restore Service and double click
On the General tab set [Startup Type] to Automatic using the drop down list
Click the Start button to start the service
Close the Computer Management console
Return to System Restore in Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not Configured
Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system.

When I started down this list of instructions, I get to the group policy editor, then to this step:
Navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore

I don't have a "system/system restore" section under the Administrative templates.

What next?  How do I recover my system restore?
