Question

ASPI32.SYS & wnaspi32.dll CORRUPT

Asked by: ginovino

Just recently I decided to remove Roxios EASY CD Creator Ver.5.0 from my WinXp p4 machine. It came installed on this DELL Dimension 8200 3.2ghz when I bought it back in 2002. I used both the Roxio uninstall and downloaded the Roxizap.exe tool to make sure everything was removed.

I also have installed Nero Ultra 6.6 and it has served as my primary cd & DVD authoring tool since I installed it and maintained its updates since 2003.

About a year ago I installed Plextor PX-800A DVD writer. It has worked fine until just recently when it refuses to recognize or copy/record any DVD based disks.

I ran the NERO InfoTool and it claims that both my system ASPI32.sys and WNASPI32.dll were corrupt. However, the NERO WNASPI32.DLL was ok.

I spent hours on the net attempting to find a clean version of these files to install so that the DVD recorder could work again, I could not find any which were to be free.

Let me add some info about the corrupt files in question:

ASPI32.SYS version 4.71.2  (16512bytes installed) Adaptec version. Located in
C: windows/system32/drivers

WNASPI32.DLL version 4.71.2  (45065bytes installed) Adaptec version. Located in C: windows/system32

Various postings I read had numerous comments about a file called WOWPOST.exe & WINAPSI.DLL

I checked the NERO VERSION OF WNASPI.DLL and it size is 164112bytes ver.2.1.074. Is much larger than the Adaptec file. I copied it over to the replace the Adaptec version and the NERO INFOTOOL claimed everything was ok??? Go figure??? I replaced it with the original corrupted file and it remained corrupted.

In terms of the equipment, I have the CD units set up in a Master/slave relationship with the Plextor as the master and a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400b

I tried reading through the numerous postings on EE, though they seem to be less apt to resolve the issue. In a google search there were a number of sites which assured repair, I downloaded files from FORCEASPI forum, but dont know how to install them. They appear to be the correct versions to replace those that are corrupt on my machine. (http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm).

I need some guidance and hand holding through this one this one.

Extract the files from the zip folder
You should end up with 8 files and three folders

Run aspichk.exe to check your installation

Run the files in this order:

DUMPASPI.BAT
KILLASPI.BAT
RESTASPI.BAT

Then reboot

Run aspichk.exe to re-check your installation

Aspichk should now report a clean install - this doesn't always mean your burning software is fixed though.

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-09-28 at 09:01:31ID: 25440459

Let me explain that I don't understand how you want me to "run" this attempt.

I did unzip the files into a folder. Wtih the expection of the ASPICHK, all of the files have their respective extensions abbreviated... ex: .SYS becomes >>>.SY_   or .DLL becomes DL_  The last character is dropped.and converted to an underscore. The Install.bat & Aspiinstall.exe, readme.txt and a few other files maintain their complete names. There are18 files plus a PDF and DOCS folder.

Couldn't I just rename the ABOVE abbreviated file names to complete them? Then change the "installed" files for ex.---ASP32OLD.SYS and so on. This way I could always go back to the them if I had too?

To be honest , I'm not sure how to go about running the program to install... is it in DOS from the command prompt or through windows using the ASPIINSTALL.exe.

Please provide a clear and step by step explanation.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-09-28 at 11:20:07ID: 25441766

Step one extract the files.

The link you provided leads in turn to this download: http://radified.com/Files/ForceASPI_v17.zip
Open this with WinZip and use the extract button.
When the extraction path is offered choose your desktop and name a new folder for the files to be extracted to.
You should then end up with a folder that has the contents illustrated below.

If you do then run the .BAT files in the order of my first post.

If you don't post again.

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-09-29 at 16:43:10ID: 25454509

Again I ask for clarity.

Am I to run the .BAT files from within the desktop or do I have to go out to the command prompt and run the batch files?

You failed to address my earlier comments:

I did unzip the files into a folder. Wtih the expection of the ASPICHK, all of the files have their respective extensions abbreviated... ex: .SYS becomes >>>.SY_   or .DLL becomes DL_  The last character is dropped.and converted to an underscore. Couldn't I just rename the ABOVE abbreviated file names to complete them? Then change the "installed" files for ex.---ASP32OLD.SYS and so on. This way I could always go back to the them if I had to"

WHY WOULDN'T THIS WORK AS WELL?

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-10-03 at 14:04:12ID: 25487102

I have tried several times but can't reproduce the abbreviated file types problem you describe. The underscore at the end is typical of Microsoft's compressed install format which uses a command line utility called EXPAND to unpack it - simply renaming the files shouldn't make them usable. Because I can't see what you are doing I'm trying to take this stage by stage in very small steps.

Start by downloading the file http://radified.com/Files/ForceASPI_v17.zip linked to above again.

1) Open it with WinZip

Do you see the same contents as the picture below in the WinZip Explorer window?

If not post back here (ideally with a screenshot of what you do get)

If you get the same content then press the 'Extract' Button at the top of the window (the centre one of the nine icons on the toolbar) create a path to your Desktop for a folder called ASPI (eg C:\Documents and Settings\<ProfileName>\Desktop\ASPI )

2) Now open the folder you created called ASPI

Are the contents the same as in picture above?

Again if not please try to post an image of the contents you have got

If the contents resemble the window in the picture above then run the BAT files in the order listed in my first post (you can run them in Windows by double clicking on each in turn and waiting for them to complete before running the next).

3) If you've got ths far then double-clicking on aspichk.exe should show your ASPI layer is now correctly installed (and identify the total number of devices configured to use it).

I don't mean to be difficult or so it may appear. I think we have a communication failure on my request to make things simple for me to understand.

1) Lets assume I download a new bunch of files from FORCEASPI.
2) I use winzip to unpack it to a desktop folder.
3) are you saying the files you unzipped from Forceaspi had their complete files extensions and NOT abbreviated as in my example?
4) Next am I to run the variious:
DUMPASPI.BAT
KILLASPI.BAT
RESTASPI.BAT

inside of windows? Or do I have go out to the system prompt and type it out in DOS? what do I type if I need to gout into DOS?

5) If I am to run these from inside of windows, do I again, unzip the downloaded file from FORCEASPI and run the clean up?

A couple of points, I have a an ADAPTEC folder which has a group of ASPI Files & DLL's sitting in it. They seem to be the latest versions 4.1.7.2 etc.

I have attached a screenshot of the first FORCEASPI file I opened.

THE 2ND SCREEN SHOT IS OF THE ADAPTEC FOLDER.

Before I proceed, I want you look this info over and respond.

Thanks,

Don't worry about the communications - it's not helped by me being off-site a lot lately either :)

(Plus it's just gone midnight here so this will be my last post for around 10 hours!)

Firstly we seem to be working with two different sets of downloaded files.

Ignore your Adaptec files for a while.

1) Let's assume I download a new bunch of files from FORCEASPI. - yes - this zip file http://radified.com/Files/ForceASPI_v17.zip
2) I use winzip to unpack it to a desktop folder. OK
3) are you saying the files you unzipped from Forceaspi had their complete files extensions and NOT abbreviated as in my example? Yes - compare our screenshots
4) Next am I to run the variious:
DUMPASPI.BAT
KILLASPI.BAT
RESTASPI.BAT

inside of windows? Or do I have go out to the system prompt and type it out in DOS? what do I type if I need to gout into DOS? - you don't need to go to DOS it will all work from inside Windows (even though the BAT files will open a DOS window) but you MUST run the BAT files in the right order so your previous configuration is backed up.

5) If I am to run these from inside of windows, do I again, unzip the downloaded file from FORCEASPI and run the clean up? - not sure what you mean here there shouldn't be a need for a stage 5)

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-10-03 at 16:26:06ID: 25487520

I have downloaded from the link you provided a NEW FORCEASPI FILE. I have attached a screenshot of its contents. It has many less files than your screenshot.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-10-03 at 16:41:06ID: 25487551

For some reason your files don't seem to have unpacked correctly.  Did you use the Extract button in WinZip?

ASPI32.SYS
WINASPI.DLL
WINNT.REG
WNASPI32.DLL
&
WOWPOST.EXE

Need to be copied into the WINNT folder

WIN9X.REG, APIX.VXD & ASPIENUM.VXD should be in the WIN9X folder

Once you've done that you should be good to go.

Double-click on the BAT files
DUMPASPI.BAT
KILLASPI.BAT
RESTASPI.BAT

Then reboot

i have used the unpack icon in winzip and this is what I have received. Not nearly as many files as you have shown.

So in the interests of haste... let me try again and I will await your return. I am in USA Mountain time which is 8hrs behind European time.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-10-03 at 19:05:50ID: 25487856

ASPI provides a pass-through interface between the two main components of a software driver
a manger that is written to specific host adapter hardware
and a device module or application that is tailored to particular peripheral.
That said i think your only problem was when you  recently removed
Roxios EASY CD Creator Ver.5.0 from my WinXp p4 machine
If you put Roxio back on and then re-install Nero ie repair ie through the setup disc all should be well
your roxio came with your computer. so it's an oem.

by: BillDLPosted on 2009-10-04 at 06:21:49ID: 25489115

Hi ginovino

You obviously have your WinZip settings such that it unpacks all the files to one folder rather than preserving the folders and their individual and separate contents that were zipped up.  I just use the Right-Click WinZip option:
"Extract to Folder C:\SomePath\ForceASPI_v17"
The folder layout should be as shown in the Code Snippet for the batch files to work.  Copy and paste into Notepad and then reorganise your contents accordingly, or else just do as Masqueraid has suggested.

I tend to agree with Merete for several reasons.

I am not sure if you are aware of this, but Windows XP DOES NOT support the "ASPI Layer" by itself, and therefore applications that want to communicate with CD-Writes, SCSI Scanners, etc, must have this Aspi support installed by their own software packages.  Previous versions of Windows DID install the *.SYS and *.DLL files that have been referred to.

See these pages for examples:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182542
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300674

Part of the problem with CD-Burning in Windows XP is caused by clashes with the ASPI-related files installed by different software unless those *.sys and *.dll files are retained solely within their own folders and not placed in some communal "shared" system folder.  It got to the extent that Ahead Nero had to release patches to disable Roxio's files and vice-versa, and the issue wasn't helped by all the various Windows Media Player add-ons that could use the Aspi "layer" installed by other software or by the add-on.

The Windows CD-Burning Service (IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service) doesn't really interfere too much with installed CD-Burning software as it uses C:\Windows\System\imapi.exe to do its dirty work, but I always suggest disabling that service if you have a fully featured CD-Burning application installed.

On a standard Windows XP system you will not normally find any files named *aspi*.* that match the file names given.  However, here are the results of a search of my Windows XP SP3 system for files named *.aspi*.* that match:

C:\Program Files\AMS\WnASPI32.dll
No file properties, but this shows when I "peek" into the file contents:
Rocket Division Software 2001-2005. All rights reserved.
ASPI Layer for Windows NT/2000/2003  Version 5.
AMS is the folder I have Indigo Rose AutoPlay Media Studio installed.  It provides a "publish to CD" type function.

C:\Program Files\Samsung\Samsung PC Studio 3\WnASPI32.dll
This is the Sync software for my mobile phone.
File Properties:
"CompanyName" - "Rocket Division Software"
"FileDescription" - "ASPI Layer for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003"
"FileVersion" - "6.6.30 Build 20060630"
"InternalName" - "WnASPI32"
"LegalCopyright" - "Copyright (c) Rocket Division Software 2001-2006"

C:\Program Files\Moyea\PPT to DVD Burner Pro\StarBurn\WnASPI32.dll
Installed by "Moyea PPT (PowerPoint Presentation) to DVD Burner" application.
File Properties:
"CompanyName" - "Rocket Division Software"
"FileDescription" - "ASPI Layer for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/Longhorn"
"FileVersion" - "7.2.20 Build 20070220"
"InternalName" - "WnASPI32"
"LegalCopyright" - "Copyright (c) Rocket Division Software 2001-2007"

Now, if any of those files happen to be in a "Path" that is shared, then you can have issues.

Search your C:\ Drive for files named *aspi*.* and take note of the paths where any files named "WnASPI32.dll", "ASPI32.SYS" (or permutations of those file names) were found.

Open a Command window (Start Menu > Run > and type  CMD  > click OK or press Enter key).
Type the command     SET
It will scroll down beyond the first line of output, so scroll back up and look at the line that starts with   PATH=
Particularly look for paths that point to "program" folders rather than to Windows "system" folders.

If any of your *.sys or *.dll files are in any of the paths mentioned, then that can be a problem if the files are left-overs from a previous software and the files are not compatible with some other software.

Personally I find that messing around trying to get things like this working is a major time waster.  I don't mean your question, which is perfectly good and may present experts and yourself with a challenge that may be enjoyable to masochists.  I am referring to the speed in which you can get back up and running without subjecting yourself to this kind of headache.  I am now more inclined to just back up all my settings and files, then do a reinstallation of Windows XP.

If you are interested why I am appearing to be slightly negative, then read my attached notes (made for another person) which are not totally relevant to your question, but rather to the general issue.

Bill

To BillDL, Thanks for the litany on the ECDC ver 5.0. I indeed did have that program as an OEM for this machine and had virtually all of the issues you wrote of : High & Low filters, software crapping out, running roughshod over my NERO Software and so on...I gave up on Roxio and just used NERO ver 6.2.

But I bought Roxio ver.9 to copy VHS tapes over to DVD and found out it doesn't come with a DVD burner!!!! I have to buy an add on. Frankly I am going to unload it and see where it gets me.

I will likely move up to the latest version of Nero as I have many years of good results with it and I understand its faults and shortcomings.

I will however try to get the aspi thing installed and get back to you kind folks with my results.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-10-29 at 22:50:29ID: 25700404

ginovino you shouldnt need aspi thing with windpows xpsp4 or windows xp period maybe you have an OEM version of the software
also you'll still need the same plugin with Nero,
the plugin you're referring to is the mpeg 2  which enables you to burn DVD, please see my previous post
this plugin usually comes bundled with the software with new DVD rom burners OEM,
look for a DVD burner combo with Nero software
and all should be fine.then....
With xpsp2 and up you may need a special plug to run Nero if you rom drive is an Adaptic
look down to>>External links
Adaptec's ASPI driver
Windows ASPI Package
Non-Adaptec implementations
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_SCSI_Programming_Interface

I bought Nero 7 the full boxed version and since it's not OEM it supports changing rom drives and never needed to install this aspi with the new DVD roms.
ASPI was developed by Adaptec in the early 1990s. It was originally designed to support SCSI drives. Support for ATAPI interface (such as IDE) was later added.

My version of Nero has its own ASPI Driver. I do NOT have any ROM drives. I have a 48x CDRW and a 18x DVD RW/+- Plextor drive. I believe the Adaptec stuff came with the Original OEM CD-R drive I have in here and changed out many years ago. You make reference to Windows SP4 ???? When did that release come out? I only have SP3 installed....Or was that a typo?

Must be my misinterpretation, my mistake.... you wrote here>Question: Just recently I decided to remove Roxios EASY CD Creator Ver.5.0 from my WinXp p4 machine

"P4" was meant to as Pentium 4, not "sp4".

My understanding is MS latest SP for windows is SP3......

The links you provided brought me to Adaptecs last version of ASPI which happens to be the version which was installed and became corrupted causing me the grief we are discussing.

Your link also provides installation instructions for this version... should I attempt to install it to get me back to my former state?

Can you please do us a favour and produce a quick report that should let us know what ASPI-related registry settings and files currently exist in your system folders, because I suspect that there could be a mess by now.

Save the attached file "Current_ASPI_State-cmd.txt" to any folder, Right-Click and Rename it to "Current_ASPI_State.cmd", accept the warning about changing file extensions, then Double-Click to run it.  When complete it will produce the file "Aspi-Report.txt" in the same folder.  Please upload that file here with your next comment.

The report is attached as requested.

What of my question regarding the ASPI version being provided by my most recent ADAPTEC download?

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-11-01 at 08:44:23ID: 25714287

I attempted to install ver 4.7.2.0 of the Adaptec files from the Adaptec download. It installed 2 of the 4 correctly:

wnaspi32.dll ver 4.7.1.2.0
aspi32.sys    ver 4.7.1.2.0

And the other 2 files came up with old versions.
wowpost.exe ver 4.6.0
winaspi.dll       ver 4.6.0

I have attached a copy of the ADAPTEC zip file for your review. I followed their install instructions but the neweer versions failed to install...why? I added the extension "zip" on the file to allow sending it. You will have to remove it inorder to open it.

Remind me what it is that you are trying to do please.
I thought you uninstalled Roxio Easy CD Creator version 5 and elected to use Nero Ultra version 6.6 instead.  We have already established that Windows XP does not install its own ASPI layer, and that any ASPI-related files found n your system will have been installed by 3rd-party software.  Given that Nero installs its own ASPI support ("My version of Nero has its own ASPI Driver"), then I am puzzled why you are persevering in trying to install Adaptec ASPI that dates back to 2002.  My intention with the report was really intended as a means to know what needs to be cleaned up, ie. get rid of all leftovers and start from fresh.  Sorry if I've completely lost track of the aims here.

Now I better understand to intricacy of the ASPI issue. I will likely move to the Latest NERO software as they have  provided mw with the least issues.

I was just trying to tidy up things as I get nervous when I see error messages. I thought now that I have found the correct drivers, you could help me install them and close the matter out finally.

Agree with your idea to get nero
to recap and put it together
as I said in my earlier  comment I bought the Nero 7 boxed version and my aspi was nolonger needed, it may actually be causing a conflict problem and that lead me to think,
which I also mention  earlier after you uninstalled Roxio may have caused the problem to start with as Roxio was using it to burn the DVD and you need the DVD plugin. re-installing Roxio may fix it.
I don't like Roxio either once a Nero user :)
