Question

Random Reboots / Help interpreting minidumps?

Asked by: LeighWardle

Hi Experts,

My Windows XP Pro SP3 computer is spontaneous rebooting once or twice a day.

After the reboot, this error is logged in the event log:

Event ID: 1001           Event Source: Save Dump

Description: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x1000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\windows\Minidump\Mini092709-02.dmp.

I have attached the dumpchk.exe output from the last 3 minidumps - these files have extension .txt.

The .zip file that has the actual minidumps is here: http://www.mincad.com.au/forum/files/temp/Minidump.zip.

Regards,
Leigh

Download Whocrashed

http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

Isntall, allow the program to download the proper symbols version for your OS

now run the tool and note which module/DLL/Service is crashing, usually the faulting module will show , and is probably going to be a faulty / outdated device driver, usually obtaining the latestr version of the driver will take care of it.

please post back results if you are still unsure

Hi Admin3k,

I downloaded and installed WhoCrashed Home Edition 1.01.

I let it download windbg (I can't be sure what the name was).

When I click WhoCrashed's Analyze button, I see the progress bar go to 100%, but then the progress bar disappears.
Where do I find WhoCrashed's Report?

Regards,
Leigh

Hi hopeleonie,

Did you work out that the problem is with mozy.sys by analysing the minidump?

I do rely on mozy, so I am not prepared to uninstall it.

I believe I am running the latest version of Mozy Client - I have v1.16.0.8 - that's same version as on: http://mozy.com/home/download.

What else can I do?

Regards,
Leigh

Dear  LeighWardle

Unfortunately, I see in the minidump analysis its caused by mozy.sys. (Im 99% sure when you uninstall it, you will not have any blue screens!) You have now 2 options. Do you have free Technical Support by Mozy? If yes contact them. And send them the logs & minidumps. Otherwise open a new case here, then a MozyHome Expert will handle your case. Because, i have no experience with MozyHome. But if you dont like to open a new case, I will try my best!

Kind Regards
hopeleonie

Hi hopeleonie,

Many thanks for your help.
You were right about Mozy - see this email I just sent to mozy support:

My Windows XP Pro SP3 client has been crashing one or two times per day.

I had an expert analyse some of the Windows XP minidumps and he says the problem is with mozy.dll.

I have compared the dates and times of the crashes as given by the minidump timestamps with entries in the mozy.log file - in every case the crashes are within one minute of entries in the mozy.log file that look like this:

Error: Filter blind from fresh install or improper shutdown
15Sep2009 18:53:04 mozybackup.exe: Warning: Parsing old log file: C:\Program Files\Mozy\Data\filter_raw.log.1
15Sep2009 18:53:04 mozybackup.exe: Error: Filter went blind, performing recovery steps.

I have attached the mozy.log file, also a .zip file containing 3 recent minidumps.

Hope you can sort this out - I love mozy, but life is difficult with a PC that crashes frequently

hopeleonie- I am going to award the points to you - as you alerted me to the fact that Mozy is the cause (or is implicated) in the crashes.

Regards,
Leigh

Hi hopeleonie,

Here is the advice I got from mozy support (my comments are in bold):

1. Click on "Start" and click on "Run".

2. Type the command "regedit".

3. Double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\(double click)Software\(double click)Mozy\(double click)Options.

4. After that, look at the right panel. If you find "tempdir" there, double click on that and clear all the values in it and set the value C:\windows\temp there.

my tempdir was set to:
G:\Temp
H:\Temp
I:\Temp
J:\Temp
D:\Temp
E:\Temp
F:\Temp
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
S:\Temp
K:\Temp

(I have a lot of hard drives and partitions)

5. If there is no tempdir, right click on empty space on the right side, click on "new" and select "Multi string value" and type tempdir. This will create a new key with the name "tempdir". Double click on that and set the value C:\Windows\Temp.

Close the registry window.

After that we need to install filter. Here are few steps to do so:

1) Go to the folder "C:/Program Files/MozyHome/. Right click on the file Mozy.inf and select "Install".

(If the files extensions are hidden, you may find two files with name "mozy". One is a system file and the other has description "Mozy Setup Information". The setup information file is mozy.inf)

2) Click "Start". Select "Run" and type in services.msc.

3) Look for service "Mozy backup service". Right click on it and select "Restart".

I will keep my fingers crossed for the next week or so - hopefully my system will be stable again!

Regards,
Leigh
