Windows XP Remote Assistance with DSL, Router, and AT&T U-Verse

Hello,

I am attempting to setup using Remote Assistance in Windows XP to be able to connect to my father's computer when he needs assistance.  The configuration is as follows:

Requesting system: Windows XP Home, AT&T U-verse with built-in wireless router.

Responding system: Windows XP Pro, DSL modem in bridge mode, and LinkSys Router.

I am uncertain which ports need to be available and how the port forwarding should be configured.

It uses the standard TS port (3389)

on your fathers machine click start then run then type cmd and hit enter.  Now type:

ipconfig /all

It will show you the IP address of the machine. (Im using linux or I would paste it for you).

Now in the router you want to forward port 3389 to the IP you saw with the above command.  

You only need to do this on your fathers machine, because the port does not need to be forwarded on your side.

So forward port 3380  to your fathers IP.



Just so you know this is not the safest thing in the world.  You are opening the machine up to the net when you open a port.  If it was me I would make sure I read about the security implications of doing this.

U can also use team viewer to do this and even don't require any portforwarding.
