Question

Windows XP SP3 very slow to logon (5 minutes or more)

Asked by: Nikolaj77

Hi,

I have a client which experience very slow logon times on one on of his PC's. There are 15 PC's in total and this PC is the only one that experience slow logon times.

When he logs into his PC it takes around 5 minutes before the desktop is even presented. It hangs the 5 minutes at "Loading your personal settings"

The environment:

* Windows XP SP3
* Part of a Windows 2003 domain
* Using roaming profiles
* The other PC's on the domain does not experience slow logon times.
* No folder synchronization is enabled
* Offline caching is disabled
* No nonpresent UNC pathes are mapped
* The global profile share, has the following offline settings: "Only the files and programs that users specify will be available offline."
* The global profile share is located on a memberserver in the domain
* There are two Windows 2003 R2 DC's
* There is also a Terminal Server present in the environment, where usere logon from remote to work on their desktop.

There is an event (event id 1525) in the eventlog:

"Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored."

Can someone please help us locating the issue regarding the slow logon times and resolve it?

Is the problem related to the event 1525?

Thanks.

Regards,
Nikolaj

Hi Vanikcz,

Thanks for your quick answer.

Whats the total size of the profile?

Answer: the users profile is 798MB large and is of type global and status global

Is network connection setup properly?

Answer: Yes, the network is setup properly. It is using DHCP. The only thing that is a little abnormal is that they have three DNS servers in the DHCP settings. Two are the domain controllers, and also one external DNS server on the internet. We have tried to manually define only the two DC's as DNS servers on the PC. No result. Also there is a Cisco VPN client installed, version 5.0.05.0280. I have tried to go into advance settings of the network and moved the connection for the internal LAN to the top in the priority selection.

Also try to get new drivers for network card from manufacturer...

Answer: This is a laptop that is one year old. All the other laptops from the same shipment works ok.

And is it happening to one user on this computer or it doesnt matter who is logging in?

Answer: It is only happening for this particular user.

BTW logging off also takes around 5 minutes. It hangs at "Saving settings".

Thanks.

Nikolaj

Try to copy some files with similar size (800MB) how long it will take... from this user... I think it is very large profile... And thats it, bat it can be something different, try it.

In the profile there is many small files or there is a few large files aka users photogallery from vacation?

by: Nikolaj77Posted on 2009-10-07 at 01:56:12ID: 25513272

Hi,

We have now removed files away from the desktop and My Documents so the profile is now down to 189MB.

The logon time is still around 5 minutes.

I think that the error might relate to the event id 1525 ??

Nikolaj

Offline folder caching is enabled on the profiles share as mentioned, but will that cause long logon times?

by: VanikczPosted on 2009-10-07 at 02:21:25ID: 25513375

200MB is still large try to locate where is stored this amount of data. And remember that if you delete files, the change must replicate to profile, so first logoff/logon may be slower...

To event id that you seeing:
this user hace some extra settings or it is the same template as other users? (diferent server)

do you know www.eventid.net?

by: Nikolaj77Posted on 2009-10-07 at 02:24:14ID: 25513389

no this user does not have extra settings.

Will try the extra reboot now.

I just consulted my MS Text book, and MS suggest as a best practise to disable Offline Folder caching.

by: VanikczPosted on 2009-10-07 at 02:25:11ID: 25513397

That works

by: VanikczPosted on 2009-10-07 at 03:03:09ID: 25513606

And if you copy some large files when you are logged on, it is working fine?

by: Nikolaj77Posted on 2009-10-07 at 05:54:42ID: 25514790

Hi,

I agreed with this client to disable roaming profile for this particular user.

Now it runs fine.

But I also found that I should enable folder redirection to redirect Application data, My documents, Desktop etc... to another folder to prevent it to sync everytime the user logs on/off.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Nikolaj

You are welcome :-)
We are using folder redirection with no problem to home directory of user, that is stored on server. Also, due to file server is Windows 2008, there can be quota template. I use limits for profile on each user. Users are limited to store 150MB in their profiles.
