Use driver genius to FULLY uninstall /remove your driver, then you can update them with it.

What i want to do is to let XP Pro use its own best driver for this. Am i right in thinking that as far as Device Manager is concerned, i have to 'disable' the adaptor?

Try following the above procedure instead to remove the drivers completely. In step 9, see if windows will then use it's own "best" driver instead of the mfg supplied one.
