If by 'check your playback devices' you mean check whether they're functioning properly in Device Manager, they are.
Will uninstalling the Realtek software have no detrimental effect on performance?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsNothing major this, just a minor annoyance. When my Asus laptop boots to Windows (XP, SP3), the Volume icon in the tray includes the crossed red circle, indicating volume is muted. However, it's not muted - anything I do with sound produces sound from the speakers.
Opening the Master Volume controls shows the Mute all tick box as checked. I can mute the volume easily enough by unchecking and checking that box again. But what I want is either the machine to boot up without the mute icon showing, or to boot up with mute actually in effect (that would be my preference).
The tray also includes Realtek HD Audio Manager which seems to control the sound on the laptop so that's likely related, but no settings in that seem to control muting the sound on startup.
I have already ensured the audio driver is up to date from the Asus website.
Just a gripe as I say, but any suggestions gratefully recieved.
cid.

I'm not reinstalling Windows just for this, that's a giant overkill just to get rid of an annoying icon.
Thanks for the help all. It sounds like beyond reinstalling drivers (which, as I said, I tried to no avail) there's no solution to this. I was wondering if anyone had encountered it before but it doesn't sound like anybody has.
Well it's finally fixed, though I'm not certain quite what fixed it. I reinstalled the drivers again, didn't work. I fiddled about in the Device Manager trying to uninstall and reinstall anything vaguely related and messed about with all the settings, and still nothing on the next reboot.
But I then reinstalled the drivers a third time, and this time it fixed it, so whether the drivers finally took or my fiddling around sorted it I couldn't say.
Still, all's well that ends well. Thanks all for the help.

check your playback devices. Also try uninstalling the Realtek software and then see if the Windows tools are ok.
