Question

XP SP3 not recognizing 8GB SDHC card

Asked by: jiiins2

Hi,

I just purchased a 8GB SDHC card that came with an USB card reader (SDHC compatible). When I plug the empty card reader into any of my two XP SP3, the system recognizes it and assigns a drive letter as expected. When I plug the SDHC card into the reader though, the drive letter disappears and then appears again for a second repeatedly, and the system becomes somewhat unstable until I pull the card out. This problem doesn't occur with an old 512MB SD card.

I googled a lot about this problem but I couldn't find any right solution even though there are many hints around that XP sometimes can't properly handle large capacity cards. The various MS fixes are already included in SP3 so they don't apply. The card reader is generic and I can't find any drivers for it, but I suspect is more of an XP issue.

Any clues?

Thanks a lot!
Jay

Who is the manufacturer of the SD card?

by: WolfherePosted on 2009-10-14 at 19:06:10ID: 25576708

Its quite possible that the card is formatted to fat32. Fat32 can only access 4 gigs. If you can format (quick) to NTFS from Manage (right click on My computer and select manage), Select Disk Management on the left, right click the drive in question on the right and select format. Format to NTFS and you should be good to go.

My Kingston Data Traveler 200 is 64Gb and it says (Computer Management) that it is formatted as FAT32. I admit to being much surprised by that, but it readily recognized by my working XP Pro SP3 machine (NTFS), by my Vista Laptop (NTFS) and by my semi-retired PC300 with XP Pro in the basement. So I would say it is a card problem and not an XP issue. ... Thinkpads_User

Never had any issues with XP recognizing large SDHC cards. My guess is the card itself is bad.
And no, FAT32 is not limited to 4GBs lol
You say the camera can see the card, but does it format it correctly? Can it save pcitures to it?
