the harddrive is ok it doesn't matter how many times we do reformat it - it always gives us the same error. Now we will try to remove some RAM to see if that's the problem.

Browse All TopicsHi,
we have a new desktop computer :
Gateway DX4820, 1TB, 8GB ram, Win Vista Home Premium 64 bit, Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8200
We sucessfully added another new internal 500GB hardrive (WD 500YS) - it was convereted and reformated so Vista can see it now.
We would like to instal Win XP Pro 32 bit on that new drive and than to have option to boot or Vista or Win XP systems.
What we did so far. We unplagged the Vista harddrive, left only a new empty 500GB disk connected. We boot from CD ROM with a genuine new WinXP Pro 32 bit installation disk.
Windows installation started to load the data but then we got a blue screen recommending to check the disk with CHKDSK /F and some error message ...
Any thoughts on this?
Thank you.
J.

reformatting does not telll much about the drive; but a diag will
use the WD one : http://support.wdc.com/dow
Did you load the sata driver? The BSOD is probably 0x0000007b as the sata controller driver is not native to xp. You'll either need to install it from a floppy(or usb key emulating a floppy) or slipstream the driver onto an xp cd. Another option(if the bios supports it) would be to change the sata operation from AHCI to IDE(ata) or compatibility mode.
You said the following:
"We sucessfully added another new internal 500GB hardrive (WD 500YS) - it was convereted and reformated so Vista can see it now."
I assume that you had format the drive under Vista? If this is the case you can use UBCD4WIN http://www.ubcd4win.com/ to 'clear' the drive.
You also need the driver for your SATA controller of the System as jamietoner recommended. Personally I will use a floppy for installing the drive, because this is easier than slipstream the driver onto an XP CD.
From your vista environment, remove all partitions (or make sure there is unpartitioned space available on the disk). If the XP setup still can't see the empty disk, you may need to check your controller settings in the bios (AHCI or Compatibility mode), however if you change the setting your vista installation will very likely cease to work!
Vista can work with either AHCI or Compatibility (IDE) mode, to do this under Windows XP, you need to use the F6 option and provide the proper driver (floppy)disk.

ok, everyone is referring to the SATA driver (as XP needs it). We have thre WD 500YS (Western Digital) 500GB drive. Where can I get that SATA controler/driver. for this? Please do not reply "check our their website" as we have already done it and there's just a firmware update available fro the download.
Thanks.
You will need to create your own customised xp installation disk with sata drivers.
This site has all the instructions you need:
http://news.softpedia.com/
The driver is for the motherboards sata controller not the hard drive. The system uses an Intel G43 chipset so the driver it needs is part of the Intel Matrix storage manager.

Thanks, jamietoner, after adding those SATA drivers the WinXP installation went through without any problems.
However now I cannot find many missing drivers. On my laptop I'm browsing the Gateway site but all drivers there are intended for Vista32. Would those work with Win XP 32?
First I need a driver for my network card so I can connect to the internet.

try this to identify the devices :
Start-Programs-Accessories
Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices".
All hardware devices with a driver problem will be listed here.
Make a note of the first line of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will show a Vendor number and a Device number (VENxxxxDEVxxxx) both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here: http://www.pcidatabase.com
This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number. Check the manufacturer's website first or google them
I think I found on the Gateway site the XP drivers for you system.
Please follow this link and scroll down until you see the drivers that you need.

It's no problem to install 32bit on 4bit machine, I think you have a HD problem, try formatting again set it to NTFS if that doesn't work try installing with less RAM like 2 or 4GB!
