Question

XP Pro freezes after XP-logo with blue screen and mouse cursor.

Asked by: Skog

Hi!
HP computer will no longer start. It freezes after the XP-logo with a blue screen and a mouse cursor (Not BSOD). The mouse did work from start but not anymore when I moved the computer to my work bench with a different USB-mouse (haven't tried with original mouse but since I couldn't do anything with the mose I don't think that will make a difference).
Nothing happens with CTRL+ALT+DEL. Only way to shutdown/restart is to press power button for 6 sec.
I've made a clone to another HDD: same result.
I've tried to repair the Windows installation with Windows CD: same result.
I've tried to run CHKDSK /p and CHKDSK /r and fixboot c: from repair console: same result.
I've removed (but not changed) the two RAM modules, one at atime: same result.
No hardware or software changes to the computer prior to the problem.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried reinstalling XP from scratch

Also what lead to this happening ? did it follow a driver/software/hardware update or did it simply happen out of the blue (no pun intended)

OK, I guess I'm either missing something or just slow.

"did work from start but not anymore when I moved the computer to my work bench with a different USB-mouse (haven't tried with original mouse but since I couldn't do anything with the mose I don't think that will make a difference)."

Why have you not tried the original mouse? There could very well be a problem with the mouse you are using. I would, at a minimum, boot it using NO mouse and see what happens. Then try the original. Bad USB devices are very often the cause of this type of problem.

- There is no hardware I can remove if I want the computer to start.

- The mouse did work (it at least moved the cursor) at the original location but when I moved the computer I didn't bring the mouse. The mouse I'm now using works fine with any other computer. Anyway the computer still freezes with no USB devices attached.

- Getting a comment like "Have you tried reinstalling XP from scratch" in a forum like this (after explaining what I've tried to do to solve the problem, is like a car mechanic asking "Have you tried to buy a new car?"

The computer (and mouse) works fine when booting from e.g. CD

You can also try to install a fresh copy of Windows on another HDD. With this you can maybe determine if it's hardware or software.

Do you have a copy of UBCDWIN or ERD Commander? Both feature system restore tools. If you have either one, boot the system with it and try doing a restore. If not, you can easily create the UBCDWIN CD with any pc and an xp cd.

LOL  was typing the exact thing... look at the times.

Which did you use?

by: ConsultPCPosted on 2009-10-15 at 06:47:55ID: 25580474

Guys... the SP3 installation is the problem. Many computers got the same issue. This could indicate the need of the postponed re-installation of the OS. It is good that you had that system restore point, but I know many cases where System  Restore is deactivated from security reasons. Anyway, may I advise you do a fresh install and loose a lot more problems? Good luck!
