Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. XP Service Pack 2 Install

I am 0 for 2 on this forum....   Let's see if the 3rd time's a charm.

I am attempting to upgrade a Dell Dimension  8400 (P4 2.6, 512mb Ram, 80gb HD) to XP service pack 2.  I have a disc from MS to do this, but automatic update offered it to me after I cleaned out some malware, installed some updates for SP1 and then rebooted.  I prefer to use the upgrade from the MS server rather than the disc, so I clicked "install".  Everything went well, then about 2 minutes into the install, at the point the installer says "Performing Inventory", I get the following error:

"The file C:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys is open or in use by another application
Close all other applications and then click Retry"

All apps are closed, I am running nothing but the installer.  I tried ending processes in task manager and clicking retry, but nothing works.  I tried using the CD from MS, but I get the same error.

I must also point out that no browser works on this machine, not even firefox....  I can ping Google by name AND ip address from a command promt, so the NIC and DNS are working OK.  Auto updates seem to be coming in without any problems.  I know from past experience that NDIS is related to networking, but not sure what it does.  I think the malware broke something somewhere.  Any insight into this problem would be appreciated.
