Question

Print Spooler service keeps failing when printing random PDF's

Asked by: techitch2

I am having an issue with  one of my XP machines that was just recently reformatted.  First of all the printing set-up on this machine was tricky.  I have two older dot-matrix (Epson DFX-8500 and FX-880) and one laserjet (HP officejet 1022) hooked up to this one machine.  The HP through USB.  The machine worked fine for a week or two and then one day the user attempted to print (to the HP) a PFD that was mailed to her and the print spooler service failed.  I would start them up and they would fail again.  I'm seeing even ID 7031 and 7034.  I have already run a fixit tool provided by Microsoft and this worked for less then a week and the issues arouse again.  Every time you run that tool you have to set up all your printers again.  I've also done some reg editing suggested by Microsoft.  I have unpluged her HP printer and set her to print those to a shared printer in the next office.  Today she tried to print another PDF from her in-box and when she went to retrieve it the printer was flashing lights....and she said she had to reset the printer but the PDF did not print.  Any suggestions?

You might try running SFC /SCANNOW. It only takes about ten minutes.
SFC SCANNOW
Just insert your CD while holding down Shift to prevent autorun.
Release the Shift key after about ten seconds.
Then click Start and in the Run field type SFC /SCANNOW and select OK.
You may also need to delete print driver references in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers
For example, on my system within that folder I have drivers for Cutepdf, PSCript, etc.
I've resolved similar issues by deleting those files, rebooting and reloading the drivers for each required printer.

I am testing the above fix out.

I tried your fix and today we had a failure again.  I had her forward me the email with the failing PDF and i was able to print the PDF.  She is able to print to our linear copy machine and to an HP4042 (both networked printers).  Failures occur on a HP 1022 and also to a shared HP 1200.

On those 2 hp printers disable bi directional support and I would on her machine run cleanspl.exe from microsoft and wipe out all her printers etc and start fresh ( also in printers and faxes --> file menu --> server properties --> driver tab

Remove all printer drivers relating to all the networked and other printers as well as ( which Im assuming cleanspl will do )

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9D467A69-57FF-4AE7-96EE-B18C4790CFFD&displaylang=en

The other option is under the printer driver in printing preferences somewhere there should be an option to change it from truetype mode to bit image mode so that the printer ignores any fonts ( maybe worth a try before running cleanspl )

Also if you go into event viewer in the different sections ie application, system etc and find any errors ( red crosses or yellow exclamation marks and double click on each one and find anything thats relevant to the printing issues and copy and paste each relevant one into notepad ( with event id and a description )

attach that back to this post and we can go from there

Also am assuming you are using the latest printer driver for each printer ie getting drivers from manufacturers websites not using drivers from cd's as they tend to be out of date or have issues

Just saw the 2 event id's you posted in the question - I will have a look at those later and see if I can find anything of use - if you could in the mean time post back with the microsoft fixes / links / ms kb's you have already gone through that were meant to fix those issues.

Thank you for attempting to help in advance.  I have tried (Microsoft Fix it 50126) print spooler tool.  Also i have tried a manual fix that had me uninstalling all printer drivers and going into the registry and removing anything tied to the print drivers.  I also tried the suggestion from above by David-Howard.  I lastly uninstalled that local HP and set her up on a shared (thinking this had something to do with her HP) and the problems arise on the shared HP as well (not to the extent, with the local HP the print spooler fails and no printers work until i reinstall........with the shared HP the PDF just won't print and when you go to the printer there is a light flashing on it, you press the reset button and the printer prints a diagnostic and that's it....no spooler failure).  Again this seems to happen only with PDF's but not all PDF's.  I will work on your suggested fixes today and report back to you.

ok np if you use cleanspl and reset everything back to defaults which should remove everything ( printers, drivers , reset print spooler to defaults )

Also when adding the printer you using hp tcp/ip port or a standard tcp/ip port ?

Also latest version of adobe reader and latest printer driver from hp's website, also you may wanna try a different piece of software for viewing the pdf's like foxit

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Then try and print from foxit reader

Gecko.....It was Adobe.  I uninstalled adobe reader and installed foxit pdf reader......everything is working now.  Then the user told me ya it seemed to start erroring after an adobe update.  I told her that would have been useful info......but anyway things are working now.  If i run into any further issues i will try some of the other suggestions you listed but in the mean time......i'm awarding you the points.  This one has been on my plate for about a month.  Thanks.

No problem not sure of an actual fix for adobe reader as it seems to be a common problem and only seems to be work arounds such as foxit reader but if you do manage to resolve the issue it would be handy to know

thanks for the points though
