Browse All TopicsAs an idiot, I got infected big time with Antivirus 2010. It locked my Task Manager so that I couldn't kill processes. It disabled my Malwarebytes, Spy-bot S&D, and AVG anti virus. Unable to boot in safe mode as it gives a fake BSD.
I had to remove my HD and scan it with Malewarebytes from a second PC. Took me 3 times to finally remove to bugger. I had to manually delete some files on the 3rd try. Now it boots with no fake messages that I'm infected, but...all my programs are dis-associated...I can't even so a Run: CMD. Every program it brings up the prompt to pick an application to associate it with. Task Manager is still locked. I was hoping to get into the Group policy editor to fix that, but can't run any programs. I still get the BSD when booting in safe mode.
Any thing I can do to fix this? Or am I looking at a repair re-install?
I do have Windows 7 on the way, and maybe I can install it on a new HD and slave my old HD drive as the OS is hosed.

If that works, get this exe and try to re-enable task manager:

Then we can go from there.
I could not run anything from Command, everything was showing as missing file association. Someone recommended Combofix.exe. Luckly I was able to use MY computer and access my network drive to run it. That appears to have cleaned everything up. I got re-infected as I failed to do this is safe mode and re-install Malwarebytes and AVG, as those remained damaged and left inert. Started from scratch, pulled HD and scanned with Malwarebytes on a different PC, and this time ran combofix in safe mode. Re-install Malwarebytes and it found the lone bugger.

Hi Thirt,
<Any thing I can do to fix this? Or am I looking at a repair re-install?>
If you have your installation disc, I would suggest that you NOT re-install but try and do a repair installation. Before you do a repair installation you might want to backup any important data and information, just incase something goes wrong.
<I do have Windows 7 on the way, and maybe I can install it on a new HD and slave my old HD drive as the OS is hosed.>
You could do that, since your Windows 7 is on the way. Just take the hard drive that's infected and format it, again backup all your information and data, and use this drive as slave in your Windows 7 machine.
