Question

Computer randomly freezes, among other things...

Asked by: agruber85

First, off this is a brand new computer, only about a few weeks old. So I feel that these issues should not be happening. It will randomly freeze to the point where keystrokes do not even register and I have to hard restart it by holding in the power button. Another issue with the system is that it will not allow me to install or uninstall anything because it says there is already another installation going on. I have restarted many times so I KNOW that there is nothing being installed or uninstalled and this message keeps coming up. However, recently, the computer did deep freeze in the middle of a windows update and I can no longer install those updates, so that might have something to do with the installer issue, but the freezing started prior to both of these issues.  I do not know if all these issues are related or not, but I need to resolve all of them. The hardware specifications are as follows: HP Compaq dc7900 small form factor. Let me know if any other information is needed to solve any of the problems. Sorry that this post seems to be all over the place, but I am at a loss as to what to now do. Thanks for any help that can be given.

The event viewer message for the installer issue is posted below. There appears to be no event logged for the freezing.

Try uninstalling and re-installing Kaspersky AntiVirus.

1. try to scan computer with AV and antispyware programs in safe mode (malwarebytes, spybot)
2. I think that this coud be related to .net framework problem

Hi,

I think something is blocking installers to run.  I would first check if your  computer is infected or not

i would run spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html
i would run malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
i would run combofix http://www.combofix.org/

If nothing found,

i would go to services and disable all "non microsoft services"

i would go to startup and and uncheck all startup items.

If that also doesn't help

I would go to add/remove programs and remove kaspersky antivirus as said byJornak, then remove recently installed hotfixes.

Hope this works for you.

for  a brand new PC, i would just ask a warranty replacement; no use in trying to solve - you risk losing the warranty !

by: davorinPosted on 2009-10-24 at 03:26:44ID: 25651530

Hi,

Do not worry about warranty. The computer can get infected with malware in minutes and this is not covered with warranty. Also if you install just one program, or change just one settings, the computer vendor could blame your actions for problem. But most of them care about their costumers and try to correct the problem for free - even it is not part of warranty.
For hardware problems it is different story - you shoud not open your PC.

by: nobusPosted on 2009-10-24 at 04:38:38ID: 25651711

those symptoms do not seem caused by malware, but by hardware - that's why i suggested the warranty replacement
and please - leave the decision by the asker; it's not fair to try selling him your ideas
