Asked by: jskfan

I am trying to connect to internet from home but I can't.
Though when I open command prompt and type for instance Ping www.google.com I get he reply back with no problem.
I checked the windows firewall and it's off, I use internet explorer version 6 as a browser and the security level is set to low.
I don't know what is causing this issue.

Thanks

Hello jskfan,

What happen if your try http://209.85.227.147 ?
Try an other browser. Like IE 7 or 8, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, ...
Check if you have not a proxy set by a troyan or virus. (Tools -> Internet Options -> Connexion -> Networks parameters)

Regards.

1- on CMD type
ipconfig /all
 and examine the results carefully.

2- run
nslookup cnn.com
and see what it brings back.

3- If all is OK and you still have trouble, then you PC is infected with spyware, or a proxy is taking over your connection attempts.

If you get a reply from pinging www.google.com and if you don't have any firewall instaled, the problem could be in Internet Explorer. Try to install a new browser, for example firefox.

These things might help
At the cmd type ipconfig /release - wait 15 sec then type ipconfig /renew

If your using wireless router you may have a mac address causing the issue. Turn off your router wait 60 sec and turn back on.

Also check to make sure your getting a gateway address. You will have to turn off your computer, router. Then turm on routers and then computer.

This sounds to me very much like spyware/malware/virus on the machine; in which case see Optoma's post as the links he has provided would help clean issues that can cause this.  However, a couple of questions.

#1: When you are in IE6 and attempt to connect to say www.google.com - What does it show or come back with as the error?  Is it simply a "Page cannot be displayed"?

#2: Do you have antivirus software on the PC - in which case - what are you running?

Also - since you are able to ping addresses but not able to use the browser, you could have an issue with Winsock as well - you can try downloading this fix -> http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip and see if that fixes it at all too.

I realized its the IE browser. I can VPN with no problem to the corporate.

I blamed the IE but it's not.
when I reboot the computer and open IE it works for a while and then it disconnects. While IE was temporary worki I donwloaded Firefox, and Firefox also runs for a while and then disconnects.
I am not sure about the cause of the problem.
