Question

Problem Removing from DHCP Server

Asked by: Roozbeh007

Hello.

I have removed a PC from a domain recently. I call the server, OLDSERVER. on OLDSERVER I have a DHCP and DNS running as well. so all the AD users where getting their IP addresses from the OLDSERVER. even though I removed the computer from the domain, the PC is still getting it's IP address from OLDSERVER. I checked the advance setting in TCP IP and on IP addresses section it says "DHCP Enabled". Add, Edit, Remove buttons are greyed out. so I can not edit it or add anything else there. there is nothing in DNS tab when I click there. TCP/IP setting is on "obtain an IP address automatically".

How can I set this computer to get it's IP from the router and not from the OLDSERVER dhcp?
is this a registry problem? am I missing something here?

when I do IPconfig/All, this is what I get:

Hi,
Its greyed because you dont have administrative rites on it,

Its not clear when you say you have removed from ad have you physically removed it or just changed the domain name..
Is your router is configure for DHCP.
If it is physically removed and connected to your router and your router also supports DHCP ,
then go to command promt and give ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew.
with admin rites ..
I hope this will resolve your problem.

Regards,
Praveen

You need to deactivate the DHCP Server service on your old server.

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2009-10-29 at 04:42:29ID: 25692522

As above and then on the client machine you can go to the command prompt ( assuming you have admin rights )

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

hello everybodyhe OLDSERVER.
 and thanks for the advice.
I have administrative rights. I did try ipconfig/flushdns command before and had no luck. what I think the only option left for me is to disable both DNS and DHCP services on t
What I don't understand is why a stand alone computer which is no longer part of the domain on OLDSERVER still gets it's IP from the Domain controller?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-29 at 05:48:50ID: 25692994

You need to run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew

if the server is no longer on the network then it's down to the lease lenth which is 8 days by default, clients will request a new IP when their current one expires

Sorry was a quick post and missed those out  - but in the order below , if you run those after you have de activated the old servers dhcp and also joined the PC to a workgroup , reboot when needed and then run the below commands

Also not sure if those are in the correct order but thats how I normally do it and sometimes run the first 2 commands again after the renew

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

there is no point in running the ipconfig /flushdns and the ipconfig /registerdns before you do the release and renew.

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2009-10-29 at 06:01:41ID: 25693106

As above - I stated I was not 100% sure of the order but thanks for the confirmation
