Vista has SATA drive support, XP does not so you need to get the SATA drivers for your machine (download from manufacturer's website).
If you have a floppy drive on the PC then put the drivers on a disk in this and during the XP install when you get a message to Hit F6 to install additional drivers do so.
If you have no floppy drive (and cannot attach one temporarily for the install) then you will need to slipstream your XP installation disk with the SATA drivers you have downloaded. Google nlite for details.
