Question

network share redirect

Asked by: davorin

Hi,
is it possible to do a shared folder redirection on win xp computer?
I have two servers. Shared folder was moved from server1 to server 2.
\\server1\share -> \\server2\share
I also have one application, that is for certain functions referencing to \\server1\share and this can not be easily changed.
I need a solution, that when i would use (on single client PC - win xp) \\server1\share, the PC will be redirected to \\server2\share.
Renaming servers is not an option.

Thank you!

Have you tried adding an entry in the hosts file to redirect the mapping to the new host?  Will the old host continue to exist once the share is moved?

Thanks for replay.
No, I have not tried that yet.
hosts file is normally for DNS resolution and entries are formated
server.domain.com  IP address
I'm not sure that this will work for only server name (without domain).

The host will remain there for same time, but I can not wait with solution for so long.

You don't need FQDN entries in hosts. I have aliases set on my hosts to call long FQDNs by names like "test" and "dev" etc. Try putting a row in with your new server's ip and the old server's name then see if you can ping the new server and subsequently map the share.

I believe the solution you are looking for is DFS (Distributed File System) comes with with Windows Server 2003 R2 and up. There is also a legacy version available for Windows Server 2003 and 2000.

If you are not familiar with it, the basic concept is to be able to point your clients/users to a "namespace" instead of a "server name". For example, you are currently using the following UNC path: \\server\share. With DFS, you will be pointing to \\namespace\share. You will create the "namespace" to be whatever you want, but for us, its our domain name.

So now, you are probably asking "Where does \\namespace\share point to"?

You can setup DFS to point to multiple servers. You can have \\namespace\share point to \\Server1\share & \\server2\share. The selection process will happen behind the scenes, but generally speaking, the server that connects the fastest will be the one that the user will see.

See below, hope this helps clarify this technology.

pzozulka:
That is interesting and maybe could work.
So you are saying, that \\namespace could be set to \\server1?

by: davorinPosted on 2009-10-31 at 04:13:14ID: 25709217

STLOracleDude:
Unfortunately your idea didn't worked. I was able to ping server1 and response was from server2 IP, but when I tried to access the share it did not worked.
Anyway, thank you for idea.

pzozulka:
Using DFS I was able to set the exact path, as it was used on server1. Everything is working fine now and the your solution gave me more time to change the application.
Thank you!
