The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. How to Replace Explorer.exe under XP

Please keep in mind that I fix PCs for a living and have been doing this for 5 years.

Windows XP SP2 (or 3) has Explorer problem AND NO OTHER PROBLEMS.  Among the problems, I click IE on desktop and get Explorer Window (but if I click IE in Start menu it works). If I highlight one folder/file in directory listing it hilights five, if I right click on empty spot in desktop and select properties I do NOT get the Display Properties, I get an Explorer window and other similar problems. There is no OBVIOUS sign of malware (I have looked not thougougly but enough to see malware problem is unlikely NOTING THAT I DO THIS FOR A LIVING, PLEASE ACCEPT THAT STATEMENT).

SO HOW TO I REPLACE EXPLORER.EXE and nothing else is needed. Can I simply copy Explorer.exe from another working XP PC of the same XP version and SP level?

IF not,  PLEASE REPLY WITH SOMETHING **OTHER THAN**

(1) sfc \scannow
(2) Repair Install from XP install CD matching XP version and SP level
(3) System Restore to before problem started.

NOTE I SAID OTHER THAN THOSE 3, I ALREADY THOUGHT OF THOSE AND THAT IS THE POINT OF THE QUESTION PLUS WILL JUST COPYING EXPLORER.EXE FROM ANOTHER PC (same Version OS) work?
