Question

Could not lrun safe mode in Windows XP

Asked by: naveenraj

HI experts, I had my laptop Sony vaio with Windows xp professional version 2002 service pack 2 crash yesterday and could not restart properly afeter the reboot.

I coulld see the system coming up and could run task manager but explorer.exe is not running in the task manager. When I tried running explorer by opening File -> New task -> explorer.exe it throws an exception as dont have permission to do that. I run cmd prompt and tried to run exploere. exe , that too gave me the same err as Access is denied.

I restarted the PC and pressed f8 to go to safe mode, but I could not go to safe mode and it ends up in blue screen with contact system administarator message.

Can anyone help in bringing my computer to original state please? Want to know how I could run to safe mode and bring my laptop to normal.

Thanks in advance.

It would appear that either (a) something physically happened to the hard drive or (b) something corrupted the OS (malware or like corruption). I would favour (a) at this point.

I would boot the machine from a bootable CD (Bart's PE preferred) and recover data and email from the machine. Then get a set of Sony recovery CD's (from Sony or eBay) and recover the machine. If the recovery doesn't work or you cannot completely recover data, the hard drive has likely failed.

I could launch notepad , excel etc by running as a task in task manager. I could run iexplore as well, so I copied all the data in my back up hard drive. So I have recovered all the data now. Problem is i could nnot run explorer. Do you suggest to boot from boot cd now?

pls advise

If you have all your data (including email) then you probably do not need to boot from a boot CD at this point. I would not bother.

The only issue now is: Can you fix the OS in place (usually a black hole) or do you re-image for long term reliability. I favour the latter in this case, even though it takes some time.

instead of explorer try sfc /checknow

by: Yogs80Posted on 2009-11-01 at 11:23:48ID: 25714994

addtionally you can try sfc and scanreg to fix any issues with system files. else as Thinkpad said you have to repair or reinstall OS using a win XP.

It depends on your own abilities. You can find someone nearby (friend / colleague) who has XP Pro SP2 and then go to: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and get the files to build a boot CD. This is just a boot CD and since you have your files, you may not need this. You need your vendor's XP CD to to a repair or to reinstall Windows. ... Thinkpads_User

If you can get this far, I'm pretty sure you can use system restore. In task manager, go to File | New Task | and type "rstrui".  Restore the system to the most recent place before the crash.  Good luck.

An OEM CD needs the key that comes with the machine it was installed on and cannot be legally installed on a different machine (different key). What you want to do is ok with Volume Licensed media kits where the other party has their own VL key. Different for OEM stuff.

I am not expert in licensing, so it is just my own understanding at this point that I offer up. I realize you are not giving away a key. ... Thinkpads_User

They are availble to download directly from microsoft if you have an msdn account so I do not see what the big deal is about giving it to techs without a key but I will not offer it anymore.

Most of the scanners these days need to be run in normal mode so have you tried other tools besides MBAM.
With MalwareBytes along with most popular scanners are usually blocked so you would  have to rename these before saving the file then(in MBAM's case after installation you would need to go to its directory and rename mbam.exe which means you actually have to do the renaming twice.)

With Combofix just rename it once prior to saving the file, or if using another pc to download it into a USB rename it before in contact with the infected pc.
