Question

are the disks that come PCs specific to that PC?

Asked by: miriggall

I have over 100 PCs.  each came with an OS disk and a recovery disk.  do I need to keep each set or are these generic?  we buy our PCs pre imaged with a prescribed set of programs preinstalled.  the PC versions vary but I have say 25 Hp xxx's and 25 HP YYY's and 30 HP ZZZ's and 40 Dell bbb's.  I plan to replace all HP'S With Dell's.  can I keep just one set of disks for each type of PC and will that work on them if I need to recover?

As far as I know was each code unique on the CD so you had to keep al CD's with the PC's.

I've never had any problems using one OS recovery disk for a Dell on all Dells.  I usually just use the OS recovery disk though, I don't use the other disk.

Not certain with HP, but the Dell disks will work as long as you keep one per model.  Just be sure that each PC has a license sticker.

no you don't need to keep all the discs for the PCs that are the same.  The unique ID and product codes are attached to the machine in the form of a sticker.  I only keep one set per model and use the product ids on the side (Dell's don't even need that).
DEll and HP mass produce there models and use the same discs.  just make sure each machine has its sticker  with the producte codes.

Maybe one day you might want to sell off old stock as individual PCs and the buyer would want a set of discs.    sometimes you can open up the side of the case and sellotape them to a empty side.

One for each model of HP and one for each OS for Dell.  You can keep the utility disks for each model of Dell for convenience but they are the same files that you can get from the Support site.
