Question

How can i turn the found new hardware wizard back on?

Asked by: decom99

I'm having trouble installing a usb aircard.

The last IT admin turned off the found new hardware wizard somehow.

The plug and play service is running, the shell hardware detection service is running, there are no gpo that pertain to this issue, the device manager does not reflect any changes when i insert, remove or scan for changes.

The Usb stick lights up and has power. The usb ports are not disabled in the BIOS.

What else could it be?

->Plug and Play is a Windows service. Go to Start / run / type in "services.msc" (without the quote) and hit ENTER. Look down the list of Services for Plug and Play. Click on the Startup Type. If it is disabled, enable it. Save and exit.

->Also, if the above don't work, go to Start / run / type in "cmd" (without the quote) ...then at the command prompt type SFC/scannow (you will need wxp disc)

->If none of those works, then uninstall your usb drivers and then reboot

*admin rights, new network (gpo can stop another network from installin),

also found this one on google
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PlugPlay\ with a DWORD value for key SuppressUI  set to 0x1

this is a really good problem. can't wait to see what this one turns out to be.

by: decom99Posted on 2009-11-03 at 15:22:22ID: 25735010

Newdev.dll is there and there is no SuppressUI value. Also i just found that neither of the 3 working aircards (tested on other machines) will register on this laptop but a usb cdrom drive will.

Strange..

ok, so other usb devices, do they bring up the found new hardware wizard? I imagine the USB cdrom can just add itself. The aircard isn't already in device manager with an exclamation is it?

by: decom99Posted on 2009-11-03 at 15:39:20ID: 25735108

they do not bring up the found new hardware wizard but the little balloon pops up that says found new hardware.

the aircard is not in device manager whatsoever.

by: TheNauticanPosted on 2009-11-04 at 15:29:13ID: 25745299

ok, do you have any other devices to try, that wouldn't already have drivers on the system? Are they the same model aircard you are trying? Is this the only system that the previous IT admin did this to? I'm wondering if we have other things going on here?

by: decom99Posted on 2009-11-05 at 06:51:22ID: 25750012

Turns out in addition to registry "hacks" that the previous IT admin did, the aircard lit up yes...but was not ALL THE WAY IN. After thinking to try a usb extension cord with a narrower connector, the thing turned right on. (after an os install that is.) Well thats all, thanks for your help.
