Question

How to Configure WEP Access to Netgear WNDR3000 on XP Home Laptop

Asked by: drotkopf

Hi,

I have a Netgear WNDR3000 and under Setup / Wireless settings selected WEP for security options. Other options such as WPA* are greyed out and not selectable.
Pardon my ignorance, but I'm selecting Shared Key 64-bit and then I have to enter a passphrase and click "GENERATE" to get 4 10-digit hex sequences.
I tried entering that on my wireless config on my XP Home laptop but it doesn't connect (at a certain point it was mentioning something about being connected, but not being able to authenticate a certificate)

Here's a picture of my Netgear config:

Can you tell me how to make this work?

Thanks.

Are you able to connect locally?  (Can you talk to the router via wireless/web interface)? Have you tried all four keys?

Can you show a screen picture of how you setup WEP in your XP Home laptop?

Interestingly enough, many people do not agree that Shared is better (see http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8645211). Try going with Open, and do not use the passphrase.

At this point, you will want to remove this network from the list in Manage Wireless Networks list because if you tried connecting and were unsuccessful it may keep the wrong setting  and you will never connect.

The radial check is the key you will want to use (1 is checked). Make sure you type it in correctly both times. Do not use both the wired and wireless network at the same time on the computer (different computers are fine). If you type the key incorrectly, it may appear to connect but will not really get Internet (as you mentioned).

If you have not already, be sure to power cycle your cable modem if you just got this router. If you are still having issues, call your ISP - they will be able to tell if the modem/router connection is working properly.

Good luck!

Dave

- I've used other keys too.
- I'm able to connect with a wired connection on another computer.
- If I use Open, then will my connection be open w/o pw for passersby?

Thanks,

... the netgear router does not have Open as an option. Only Automatic or Shared.

by: DaveG1960Posted on 2009-11-03 at 19:50:56ID: 25736241

No, it is just a different method of authentication. (It is actually called Open-Key instead of Shared-Key which is what you were using).

Make sure you delete the wireless network from the list of memorized networks before attempting to access the network again.

Just solved it...
Under the Authentication tab, the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication" option was checked.
I unchecked it. Does it mean it will be open (like, really, open)?
Thanks.

Yes that is open now. You will want to enable authetication. We are getting there. I am looking at the owner's manual right now. Is this the 3300? I do not see a WNDR3000, only a WNDR3300: http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/list/p3/164/eol/1

Questions:

1) How old is the router? Did you buy it new?

2) How much has it been used?

3) Have you upgraded the firmware at all?

The router does not appear to be giving you all the options for some reason. I am inclined to think that we should perform a factory reset following these instructions: http://documentation.netgear.com/wndr3300/enu/202-10301-01/WNDR3300_RM-09-13.html

The password will be back to 'password' and everything else will be as it was when it was purchased. Thoughts?

I have to think about resetting to factory defaults. Will disconnect now. Thanks a lot.

Just a shot in the dark but are you entering the passphrase or key 1 as the security password for the wep? Make sure you are entering the key not the passphrase.

by: drotkopfPosted on 2009-11-04 at 13:42:22ID: 25744270

Yes. Entering the key, not the passcode (I made that mistake before...)

Anyhow, I don't want to go back to factory defaults for other reasons, so I guess I'll keep it open.

Thanks.
