you can also tell it where to look and what to index. I usually leave it on but tell it to only index certain folders of mine.

I see a process that's continually looking in folders of mine that are just storing old files, just sitting there.

What the heck is Windows doing? Opening up thousands of files for no reason?

That is the 'Microsoft Desktop Search' or 'Windows Desktop Searchwhich makes for easier searches for files.
Personally, I always uninstall it due to slowing down the machine.
