Browse All TopicsIt seems the fanatics at Microsoft finally have their dream of eliminating the need for file extensions. Except they have failed miserably.
I have a JAR file (which means Java archive). On my old Windows XP machine I can change the extension to ZIP and open it with WinZip.
On Windows 7 there is no such feature as changing the file extension. Or is there? If there is please tell me.
It seems you can only change the "Opens With" program which then change the icon. But if I can not find the WinZip program in the list, I am stuck.
If someone knows a way around this please tell me. I can not imagine that this is progress! If files have extensions, programmers should have the ability to change them. Man!

In fact, having googled it, it seems that you do it in the same way too:
Go to 'Folder Options' > View tab (you can get to 'Folder Options' through Control Panel or it's equivalent, or just by opening Windows Explorer and clicking 'Tools' > 'Folder Options') and find the tick box that says 'Hide extensions...' as above.
Un tick it, and away you go!

@senad - Are you sure? This article seems to imply that that's exactly how you do it... (including a screenshot?)

It may be a screenshot of Vista I admit, I don't know as I don't have Windows 7, but that was what I was basing my post on...
He was asking how to see and change file extensions in W7, which I was what I was telling him how to do in Folder Options...
And from his comment "It seems you can only change the "Opens With" program which then change the icon..." I figured he already knew how to associate a new app with a file type... :)

I don't have a copy of Windows 7 to play with, but with XP, you could hit this same problem if the option to 'Hide extensions for known file types' was selected...
I'm thinking there may be a similar option in Windows 7, so you'll need to untick it?
