Hi,
A friend is running an unlicensed version of XP as he could not find his original media when a reinstall was required. He now has the original media and the key on the side of the box.
Is it possible to simply change the product key to the genuine one in order to be able to perform updates etc? The version he installed was XP SP2 whereas the original disk is Sp1.

I don't know the clean way, but I'm currently bussy with making images, I use sysprep to make them.
But this is not important, what is important that I use Sysprep. If you use sysprep with the option "mini setup" and then reseal and reboot your pc, then you will come in a setup, here you can change the pc name, optional enter a domain.......and cd-key. Maybe this will help

The only complication is the installed pirate version is more up to date than the legitimate one.
The long version is they will need to slipstream their legitimate disk with SP2 to create a legitimate installer with the same SP as the current install, then run a repair reinstall. Windows will either then ask for a CD-Key or you will need to force a CD-key request (http://www.microsoft.com/
