Live updatable slide show
Here's what I'm looking for: I want to project a slide show of photographs at my party but be able to add or remove pictures from it without interrupting (or interrupt slightly) the slide show itself.
One thing I've been able to do is put the pictures on a Windows XP computer and select the screen saver as "My Pictures SlideShow". Meanwhile I can connect to the hard drive remotely and add or remove pictures from the directory that I've selected in the Settings (Use pictures in this folder).
Works great but it just shows the same pictures unless I interrupt it (and start again). The minimum time I can set for going into screen saver mode is 1 minute. Interruption is ok but 1 minute is an eternity when you are expecting a picture and you are looking at a desktop.
Software or scripts can be considered if open source.
Any suggestions?

Use Linux with KDE4.x as desktop (Kubuntu is a good option). Disable screensavers. You can change the wallpapers folder and select slideshow for your wallpapers. You can select the interval to wait between the pictures. The System will use all the slides in the folder you selected for it's wallpapers, and if you enable SSH Server you can connect to the system remotely with SCP or similar tools to copy the files to the system. Or you could use SAMBA then map the shares on the Kubuntu box to copy the files to it.

Hello,
You could create another folder for your slides, and place in shortcuts to the picture you want to display. With a remote connection, you can add/remove shortcuts without touching the pictures themselves.
That what you looking to do? Got Powerpoint or OpenOffice Presentations?

Great ideas everyone. My final solution is based on a couple of your answers so I'll be dividing the points accordingly.
Here's the solution I chose:
On the remote computer I created a folder for the pictures. I opened the folder that contained the images to be displayed. I selected "Slide Show" for the pictures in that folder (Picture Tasks, View as a Slide Show in left pane). I will add/remove pictures through file (folder) sharing (it will be projecting from the second floor, too far away to update frequently). To add pictures to the slide show, I will interrupt the show (remote control with VNC) and re-click on "View as a Slide Show". It will only be a 3 second interruption, but I can live with that.
Thanks everyone for your ideas!

Alternatively, is there a product or a script that can be run to produce the same effect.
