asked on

how to burn an ISO image to CD using Nero and install on a 2nd pc.

looking to put Drive Fitness Tool on a CD and then use it on another computer.

need plenty of details, from type of media to the very end with instructions on how to use the tool on the other computer.

I've got a never used 2GB Kingston stick is you have details on using that.

Can not currently bootup the bad pc.

Hitachi Drive Fitness Tools is here:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso

Probably easiest to do this with a CD since doing it on the USB drive is possible but requires a little more work and it sounds like you would prefer the easier method if I understand correctly.

jameso99:
well, I do know F10 gets me to the bios on the guy's system.

I'll start the above process. Never done it before.
I burned some music years ago but nothing since then and never even used a floppy or done any backup.

I've got some blank media here:
ancient: fujifilm 700 mb CD-R and smart buy CD-R 12x silver 650 mb

step by step here:
I clicked on this link
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso
and downloaded the file and saved it to my desktop for easy location. As usual Windows says it's a file it can not open.

"Get the software first (the ISO) and the ISO Recorder"
Are they in the downloaded file..?.. and I just go straight to burning?

What program will open an iso file since Bill Gates can't figure it out.
do you have any cd burning software installed? i posted how to do it in Nero
you can use this free burning application also : http://cdburnerxp.se/

I've got Nero burning rom, Nero backup, etc.
It looks to have been saved to my pc despite a new hard drive and supposedly all programs would be lost.

Jameso99 mentioned getting the software and the ISO recorder.
From what I see I've got a 2.85 mb ISO file that Bill Gate's can't open.
It that file to be burned directly to the CD?

Where does the ISO recorder come into play?

let me try Nero since I have it.

(you need to pick the image burning or ISO burning tool from nero in the backup section )
.....not sure what you mean by the "back up section".

ok, Microsoft stepped in when I went to start > programs < Nero and asked me what I wanted to do.
I chose Nero Burning Wizard and followed the instructions, and it seems the ISO file is on CD and ready to be used to diagnose the guy's hard drive.

Starbucks88:
So, I'll go try this:
Now this computer can boot off the ISO, (provided the ISO originally was configured to boot a desktop).
During the powerup of the computer, press f12 to choose the boot media, and select CD-rom.  The computer will now attempt to boot off your disk.
What version of Nero do you have?  I'll see if I can get you some version-related screenshots if you can find what version you have.

The ISO is the CD Image file - it's like the stamp you are molding onto the blank CD - it has everything the CD will have but it's not on the CD yet, so you are burning it onto the CD using Nero or any other ISO recording software.  You are recording/burning/copying the image onto the blank media so it will be usable on a computer's CD-ROM drive.

You are right to say you want to hit F12 and then select CD to choose that instead of the hard drive when selecting a boot device.
did you even look at the ubcd?  it is much better, and contains much more diags !

trying ISO from UBCD did not boot the system using F12.
Tried the XP disc to get to recovery console using F12 did not work.

Everything tried results in the same thing, a failure of CHKDSK to continue past file segment 156106 as being not readable, the inability to press any key to bypass CHKDSK, and F8 to try safe mode gets stuck on the screen that is full of
stuff like this:
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system 32\drivers\ntfs.sys
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2) > similar, etc.
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2) > similar > etc.
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2) etc.
etc.

Seems like you may have a hard disk that is failing, if it can not progress past CHDKSK.  You should copy your data off this disk, and replace it with a new one.
Avatar of nickg5

ASKER

that seems to be the next step.
Sometimes the CHKDSK will stop after file segment 156104 and othe times it won't stop until after 156105 and 156106.

The guy wants the biggest hard drive he can get, so he can fill it up again (and he will despite warnings).
There is really no data to backup but video games, no videos, photos, music, or e-mails.
>>  trying ISO from UBCD did not boot the system using F12.   <<   is this the key that brings up the boot menu?
if you are not sure, test if you can boot from the cd on a working pc.
If that is ok, enter thebios, and verify that the system is set to boot from CD first.

booting from CD is an unknown process to me.
Just put the CD in the rom and then do what?
The system has been turned on and the rom closes with the CD inside and boots normally, my pc, not the one with the maybe bad hard drive.
I've tried that UBCD with F8, F10, and F12 and get the same result as if I'm not using the UBCD.

I need detailed instructions on what do to after the rom closes and the UBCD is inside. What to do next?
the PC will boot from the device that is first in the bios boot priority list.
if the disk is the first device; it won't try to boot from cd - you have to make the cd first device in the list
to access the bios, in most cases you need to press a key during boot (Del, F2, or others)
here a list :  http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
