Why can't my "wired" laptop connect to the Internet when my "wired" desktop pc can?

I have a small network, 1 router, 2 computers, both connected by RJ45 cable to the router.

My desktop pc can connect to the Internet just fine.

My laptop pc does connect to the router successfully and is able to ping it successfully.
www.google.com is my Internet home page

From the command prompt:
When I ping google's ip address:  66.102.7.104, I get 4 replies
When I ping www.google.com, I get nothing

Is this a DNS issue?

When I do ipconfig /all on both computers, they both show the same information (with the IP address / Mac address being the only differences between the two).

What can I do to fix the problem?

Do an ipconfig/dnsflush an the command line, and see if it will work.

I would probably check your windows firewall settings on your laptop. Make sure that port 53 isn't being blocked.
Make sure the proxy setting is not selected - IE>Tools>Internet options>Connections>Lan settings

I  have (1) flushed the dns, (2) disabled the firewall and (3) checked to make sure the proxy setting was not selected in Internet options.

I still cannot display the web page:  http://www.google.com

The diagnostic log says:

Error 12007 - connecting to www.microsoft.com.  The server name or address could not be resolved.

hostname www.microsoft.com could not be resolved (error code 0x2afc).  Could be either gateway or DNS issue.
Can you post the results of an ipconfig /all so we could double check?
Note:  Both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox cannot connect to the Internet.
The fact that you can ping google but not browse to www.google.com point to a dns issue.  If you can ping the IP address, type http://66.102.7.10 in the browser address bar.  It should work.
when I type http://66.102.7.104 in the address bar, the google web page is displayed.

What the world....  That didn't require a restart, did it?  It shouldn't have.  Always something.  At least it works.

All the best..
