Where is "Local Users and Groups' In Win XP Home version?
Hi experts<
I need to change a user profile. Under Computer Management there is a category of Local Users and Groups in Win XP Pro. I cannot fibnd it in XP Home version I am trying to make the change in.
I cannot find how to change the original owners Name (Profile) to the new owners name. I was able to create a user account for "new" but "old" is still the main profile with new haveing a "my Documents" folder with ihis name. But the main profile(Not User) is that of OLD person.I cannot change it from User Accounts and need to get into Computer management>Local users and Groups. I can;t find it.
The QUESTION IS: How do I get rid of the original owners profile and make all My document files in the new users name.??

yatin 81----Thanks. That was great. It worked. But there is still a glitch. In Documents and Settings, Documents folder is listed "OLD" User. And in the User Accounts, "NEW" is listed.
The folder in Docs and Setts will not allow me to change the name because it is "a Windows Folder".
All I want to do is change that name. I was able to do that in Local Users and Groups that you guided me to, but it is not effecting the rest of the PC. What can I do? I have to be able to change the OLD users name to the new one but I do not know how beyond what you just taught me

Maybe you guys do not understand? New and OLD are just the names that I am using for the original (OLD) owner of the PC and NEW is the current owner. Except for the fact that I cannot figure out how to change the name of folder OLD to folder NEW without permission. XP HOME will not let me do something I have dome many times before.

Nobody?
Yatin 81> You gave me the answer on how to get into Local Users, but technically the question is not yet answered because I cannot yet, get rid of the original owners profile once I get there, as my question indicated I wanted to learn how to do. All I learned was how to get to the correct place but not how to fix the issue, once I got there. That is what I am asking Expert help for. What do I do to change the user name in Local Users and Groups and make the change work system-wide ??
Alright then, thanks and see you in the AM.

Because the PROFILE is different than the new owner's User Name, I am having a problem getting a certain Internet Security program to run automatically. Yatin, the iworkaround on how to get where I needed to get to were excellent. In fact, something I have been trying to learn for 3 years. BUT can you possibly elaborate on how to make the changes I need to make, once i get there, and how to make those changes work permanently?
Doesn't anyone know the answer to this or did I say something offensive, that nobody is responding.
This question is not answered yet.
(How do I get rid of the original owners profile?) of whose name is imbedded all over this PC. If I knew that, than my Internet Security App would not be confused over the different profiles and correctly run its scan at preset time. Which it cannot do now because I need the answer to this question.
Any body?

Hmmm, if I understand correctly then here would be my answer. Probably what you needed to do is instead of "renaming" the "old" username to the "new" username, which as you can see changes the name displayed used for logging ut does NOT change the filepath and numerous references to it....
What you'd rather have done was "copy" the "old" user to a "new" user. Presently by your own account you've got a slightly confusing state that user old is user new as far as the filepaths are concerned, you might want to change that back and the proceed with this other way.
There's two parts, copying the user profile which would duplicate most of the registry settings and entries, and copying the folder tree. Sorry I can't recall if Home edition locks out this feature too but give it a try:
You have to be logged on as an Administrator, and NOT as either of the accounts you're attempting to copy at the time. Right click My Computer, Properties. On the Advanced tab look for User Profiles section and click the corresponding Settings button.
You'll have to have enough space for copying the user's documents and settings.
There might be leftover messenger or outlook express identities content in the app data trees you may wish to copy or cleanup as you deem appropriate.

This is really complicated. I just do not get MS reasoning here.
Well, with millions of registry entries, carry-over from the old Win9x days, etc etc a renaming of the loginname and a complete change of user are considered two different things, and as a rule a different user is a different user not a ranamed one, but yeah there's plenty to be complex and complicated about eh.

To create your own Local Users and Groups utility in XP Home, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start -> Run.... Type mmc.exe and press Enter.
2. Click File -> Add/Remove Snap-in... and click the Add button.
3. Scroll down until you find Local Users and Groups and click the Add button.
4. In the dialog box that opens, choose Another computer and enter 127.0.0.1 (the local loopback address) and click Finish. Note: Even though there is an option on this screen forLocal computer, if you choose this you will be presented with the following message: "This computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. This snapin may not be used with that version of Windows. To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in the Control Panel." By selecting Another Computer you can work around this warning.
5. Click the Close button then OK button to return to the newly created MMC console.
6. Click File -> Save to save the new console. By default it will be saved to the Administrative Tools folder.
7. Close the MMC window.
