Windows XP SP3 freezes after login

We have a HP Desktop (XP SP3) that has been running fine for over a year, all of a sudden when the computer logs in after showing the desktop, it freezes.  I can move the mouse around but cannot even do a task manager with ctrl alt del.  I can log into safe mode, I disabled all unnecessary items from startup and attempted to login again, the same issue.  I can log in as administrator in safe mode and it will be fine, but if I log in as administrator in normal, it freezes.  I ran a full scan with Kaspersky and nothing was detected.  I ran malwarebytes and it found some adware items nothing else.
Can't figure this one out.
