Profiles have mysteriously changed to files with no suffix, unable to retrieve data

Windows XP machine working fine suddenly crashes, and will not boot back up to windows. removed drive and viewed as external drive, discovered that all folders under documents and settings have changed to a file with no suffix except for all users and default user. have not found any Malware or virus on drive.
