0ren, Excellent review. I just wanted to add that some vendors (like SUN) have UNIX for X86 too. Also UNIX does not take as much resources (memory and CPU), does not write all over itself (does not have GPFs) and more scalable.

You have a good overview already. However, advantages and disadvantages of a particular O/S may be something that depends on the situation at hand...

The windows versions have shown a tendency to become bloated during transition from 3.11 - 9X -  NT - 2k - XP, and the hardware demands increase dramatically between say NT4 and XP. If you are in a position to disregard the hardware issues totally, you may take advantage of the newer, supposedly more refined XP, otherwise you'll be cheating yourself of computing power running XP on "older" hardware.

In some situations, the pricing may be an important factor. I understand you are supposed to pay a license fee for the right to use MS software. To some people or organisations this price tag is not negligible.

The MAC OS:s preceding OS X, are not stable by any standards. They are like driving a sleek and powerful car with a sealed hood. Very nice until they act up, at which point you're left to your two feet. Their advantage is the sophisticated GUI, their disadvantage is the fact that the GUI is all there is. (more or less).

If "Unix" includes the Linux siblings, you're looking at power and versatility, unfortunately combined with a baffling complexity.

Cheers
/RID

Thankyou, Excellent.

Which Operating Systems are used for specific uses?

In other words... What are Windows, UNIX, Macos and NT specifically used for and in what field?

Thanks for all your help.
