Question

Boot up error on XP "Expansion ROM not intialized"

When I got this computer, I took the hard drive out of my old one (18 gigs) and plugged it into this one, set as the slave.  From the onset, I recieve this error, but can move past it by hitting F2--the computer runs fine and I can access the hard drive.  Any ideas?  This problem is just bothersome since I have to sit around waiting to hit F2 before the computer will boot.

It sounds like the cd is not configured in the bios correctly, go into the bios and verify the second HD and the cd are set correctly, and also check the jumpers to make sure they are set correctly (master/slave)

Agree with Steve, that it seems not to be correctly configured in bios, so if you can't get it correctly configured in bios, i suggest you upgrade your bios to the latest version.

Have a look at the Intel document. It explains in depth why this is happening (at least on an Intel MB).

Thanks to both of you, but can you be more explicit on the config in Bios?  I checked that both are being recognized on AUTO setting.  When I specify CD-ROM, the error still occurs, but the CD-ROM label is missing.  I'll keep messing with it and check the setting on the CD-ROM (should it be secondary master?).

Sorry to be such a neophyte.

Please inform us the make and model of your motherboard, so we have a chance to look up the manual. This way we can give more accurate advice.

If there ae two devices on the IDE channel, one must be master and the other slave. We obviously can't tell how you have it set now, but make sure that one is master, and one is slave

I have not broken into my case yet, but I'm pretty sure the primary/slave is set up.  I will get the make/model tomorrow.  Tried a bios update off of hp's site, for my pavilion 7915...followed the instructions to make a boot floppy and unzip the prog. into it.  As I executed the action, I got the good ol' "Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?"  Sweet.  Thanks HP.
