I use Windows 2000 Pro on a home computer with all current updates installed. My anti-virus is Nortons 2002 with up to date definitions. My firewall is Zone Alarm Pro and is up to date. My anti-trojan and anti-worm are made by TDS-3.
MY PROBLEM:
When I click the Start button in the taskbar, the menu comes up for a very brief moment before I get two error messages. The first error message tells me that an entry has been made in the error log. The second message tells me that explorer will be restarted. When I click the OK button, explorer blips for a second (reloads) and I lose most of the program icons at the taskbar clock. I can access every area of windows without any apparent errors except for the Start menu.
Here are the things that I tried, or what Ive observed:
1. Ive performed cold and warm boot ups after most of the things that Ive tried below.
2. Ive run a full anti-virus scan. Nothing changed.
3. Ive installed and ran a full anti-trojan scan, but after the fact. Nothing changed.
4. I can access everywhere on my computers system with Windows Explorer except for the Start Menu folder. I get the same negative results as if I have clicked the Start button.
5. I saw one posting here that talked about a trojan W32. I looked and found a file called winit.ini and removed it. I then booted from my W2k installation disk to access the rescue console. I looked for any files that appeared suspicious, but I didnt spot anything. Before I rebooted, I replaced the old copy of EXPLORER.EXE with a new one. Nothing changed.
6. Ive replaced the Start Menu with a Start Menu from another profile with limited success. I can access the start menu once before I lose the ability the next time I click on the Start button again.
I think this is everything.
Although I havent tried to access the start menu from another profile, I prefer not to since I do not want to take a chance and corrupt it if it isnt.
Im also trying to avoid reinstalling W2k if I can help it.
