Question

Spool32 IPF/Kernel32.dll @D17f:bff7a388

Asked by: aokj815

Welcome to my worst night/daymare!  Enter at your own risk! :)

My nightmare started approximately a year ago and to this day, I have been unable to find a solution short of blowing up my notebook and printers.  I sincerely hope that some has a miracle cure!

Here goes:

I have a Toshiba 4030CDS notebook, Win98SE, Lexmark Z52 printer (with the latest driver update, to no effect), 192 RAMM 30Gb HE, PCMCIA Card, Norton Anti-Virus 2001, Netscape Browser 7.2, Lotus 123 Millenium, Suite 7 Wordperfect, MS Office 2000, Excel 2000, Client Access 5.1, to name a few programs.

When I'm at home I use Sympatico High Speed and pcAnywhere to access a PCServer at work, that connects through to a AS400.  When I'm at work, I connect directly to the in-house network (for 10 years) and we use a dial-up ISP.

I use a Z52 at work as well as at home.  But, regardless which one I use, If I print a report that is longer that 2 pages, I get ... Spool32, my system gets hungup, the printer locks up.  The only way to release, is to power off the printer and re-start my system.

Sometimes, the system gets locked up so badly that I ahve to re-set my system which goes through the scandisk, then if all is OK, then it will reboot.

I've been using the same notebook / Win98SE for 2 years and the same Z52's for 3 years, with virtually no problems until last year.

My nightmare msg is:  (Regardless of the program that I use)

Spool32 caused an invalid page fault in Kernel32.dll at D17f:bff7a388

The above is then followed by:

LEXBCES performed an illegal operation (IPF at D17f:bff7a388), etc....then
LXACAP32, with a slightly different msg:
...illegal operation...executed an invalid instruction in module "unknown" at 0000:0064fc74

I have tried MS Solutions to Spool32, to no avail...
I have changed the printer settings, to no avail...
I have searched the internet for solutions, to no avail...
I have un-installed / re-installed my printer over 30 times (at least) to no avail...
I have installed other printers and still get the same msgs...
I have talked (many times) to Mircosoft, Lexmark, and Toshiba, to no avail...

At the office, when I direct reports to a Lexmark Optra S1822 laser printer, 4 out of 5 times, if the report is over 2 pages, I get those dreaded msgs...

I haven't found a cure for the curse yet!

HELP!!  I'm about to loose my mind...or at least what is left of it!!!

Any miracle would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Greetings, aokj815!
There may be programs running in the background interfering with the operation of the printer. If you have Norton programs running in the background, temporarily turn them off, including anti-virus, win doctor, recycle bin protect, and clean sweep. Does this fix the problem?

Turn off any firewall or ad-blocker.

If you unintall Lotus, Wordperfect, Office, Excel, Access one at a time, does the problem go away?

Best wishes, war1

According to Microsoft Q247821, Norton Antivirus can cause this crash.

Q191949 is another possibility. It says (in addition to removing any non-essential programs) that you should set printing format to "RAW", and select "Print Directly to the Printer". If these not work, autostart Spool32.exe (either by creating a shortcut to Startup or by inserting a Load= or Run= line into your win.ini).

Q151076 is about crashing when removing network printers. Probably not relevant.

Printing direct to the printer bypasses the Spool32 file. It also eliminates printing in the background so while the report is printing the computer is not available for any other task, which could be a problem with a long report and a slow printer. The Spool32 file would not happen to have a lot of garbage in it from previous failed print jobs would it?

what happened 1 yr ago (in a technical sense...)

network upgrade? or a new server?...

prior to a year ago, did the lexmark function correctly?

by: risaiahPosted on 2003-04-23 at 15:20:45ID: 8383945

i believe the first question that helps to understand the nature of our problem is: what happened a year ago that may possibly affect the lexmark's ability to connect and/or communicate with windows spooler ...

if nothing network related can be the culprit, then examine your local systems for recent (at least a year old)
software installs...

keep in mind, we are going on the premise that prior to a year, everything was fine...so whatever driver (and dll's are basically drivers) hardware or software (dll's) were blown out, an application inventory of both systems seems in order...first

for a quick fix, try downloading spool32 from another computer, load it into the /system32 directory and try to print...if that doesn't work, connect the z52 to another computer in the office or at home and see if the same errors occur...

Hi War1,

Over the past year I have gone thru and closed all but the absolutely necessary programs, several times ... to no avail.

As to the firewall, it was installed after the problems occured and I don't have an ad-blocker.

Lotus, Wordperfect, etc were installed long before (min 1.5 years prior) the problems occured.  The only one that was installed 3 months prior was Office, which I have un/re installed and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Joghurt,

You are right about the Norton Antivirus, it can cause crashes.

It was some time ago when I check out Q247821 ... to no avail.

I did change the printing format to "RAW" and everything came to a grinding halt...the system would look like and go thru the process as if it was printing, but the physical printer didn't even blink...absolutely nothing printed so I had to return to the original settings to get the printer to respond.

Also, Q151076 does not apply, sorry.

But, I do think I will revisit Q247821, maybe I missed something or maybe there has been an update to it.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks so much.

Hi Phoenix,

Yes, your right, it can take a very long time since some of my reports can be as long as 800 pages (which I run from a different comupter to bypass Spool-hell).

Note:  when I run a report from my system, after I select to print, I don't touch a thing, not even the mouse, because I am to busy praying the complete report will print and not lock up my system.

My spooler is always empty, I don't hold anything.  If the previous job failed, my system locks up and I am forced to re-boot.  Therefore it is always clean.

Thank you.

Hi Risaiah,

Your first question was exactly my first response.

It was January 12th, 2002 when spool-hell moved into my system.

I had just installed an update for a program called "Canpay", did my work and when I released the report it kept crashing, and crashing and crashing and with each and every crash, I would have to re-boot.  All in all, this happened exactly 19 times that day.

I know exactly what you are thinking...it was a bad update, right?  Well, of course it was a Saturday, so I had to wait until Monday to contact the company and get a new update.

I contacted them, they of course apoloigized and said they have the update on their website, for me to go ahead and download it.  They guaranteed that the website download was  a good download.  So, I did, but to my horror, nothing changed.

I spent the next 2 weeks working with the President of the company trying to solve the problem.  We were both convinced it was the update that caused the problem.

FYI: Canpay is a payroll program and every 6 months there are updates regarding stat deductions and I have been with Canpay for 12 years.  12 Years, problem free.  Canpay is a DOS base system.  Approx 2 months later, we decided to upgrade Canpay to Canpay Grand Master Suite, which realy is  a larger version of Canpay, but it is Windows based.

Now that I think about it, it is the only program on my system that will print up to 5 pages without crashing.  But, if the report is 6 or more, it will crash.

As I understand it, the Windows version and the DOS version, printer instructions are the same and have not changed for 4 years. (Meaning, before, during and after the spool problem).

Other things that I have tried is to download the most recent printer drivers...again, to no avail.

Nothing has changed with the network printers...
Canpay was completely baffaled as to what happened...and recommended that I contact Lexmark...

Lexmark walked me through all their procedures and a far as they were concerned everything was as it should be...and recommended that I contact MircroSoft...

MircroSoft walked me through all their procedures and again, as far as they were concerned everything was as it should be and recommeded that I contact Toshiba...

Toshiba came in on my system, they went through their procedures, and again, as far as they were concerned everything was as it should be and recommed that I contact Canpay because the problem originated with them.

So, I contacted Canpay again, and again we went through everything...they didn't know what to do...

So, I ended up starting my trek on the internet...as yet I have not found the soloution to my problem.

As yet, I have not yet tried to download spool32 from another computer, but, I will try it...I can only pray it will work...keep your fingers crossed and I will let you know what happens.

Thank You.
