The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

CRC/Invalid DOS function errors on CD's burned on old computer

Asked by Talon2281 in Operating Systems Miscellaneous

I have searched the net and seen some similar problems to mine, but none quite matching the circumstances. I have an old computer using a Smart and Friendly CDRW drive. I have burned countless CD's without problems before. So when I got a new computer, I burned 4 CD's, all with MP3 files (from CD's which I have since sold/given away), to transfer to my new computer. With my past success, I didnt even think to double burn my information, and after deleting all the info off that computer, found that 2 of the CD's I burned have errors on them. 3 CD's were ALL MP3s and one had some various other files on it as well. I checked them all on my old computer before deleting, just to make sure the info was on there, and it was. But I didnt check to make sure I could play/use the files on the disc.

On trying to rip them onto my new computer (which is running WinXP), I found that 2 worked fine, and 2 that had only MP3s would stop transfering after a few seconds. Usually about half a minute later it would come up with an message saying there was a cyclic redundancy check error. After trying and trying, and finally getting most of the songs off of one CD, and a few off the other, I gave up. I still have about 150 songs I cant get off the CD's. Mostly I was trying to copy them onto the HD. However, I also tried putting them into my DVD drive while putting a blank CD into the CDRW, hoping to burn them directly to another CD, if possible. Most of the time the computer would freeze as soon as I put in the second CD, and a few times it didnt freeze until I tried to copy from one CD to another. I can get it to unfreeze by simply ejecting the CD... it doesnt require a reboot (though Ive tried that too many many times).

Some time after I originally started trying, it started coming up with a different error. Instead of saying CRC error, it now says "Invalid MS-DOS Function" and "cannot copy file _____ to drive C:"
I tried going back to my old computer (which is running Win98SE) and reburning them, but I had the same problems there. Couldnt copy to the HD, couldnt use another CD for a direct transfer. Also went to a friends' computer running WinXP and it had the same problems. One thing I did notice is it was giving the CRC error on my friends computer. I imagine if I kept at that for a few hours, it might also change to an "Invalid MS-DOS Function" error on that computer as well.

This has gone on for days now, and Im getting desperate. So if anyone has any questions for me to clarify, or any suggestions, let me know. Thanks

Jonathan
