The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

XP Install - Hangs on 1st reboot (MSDOS portion complete)

Hi

Am I the only guy who thinks Bill was pretty tight when he released the XP OS ? Win98 install on a bare PC was as simple as running setup. Am I correct in my curent method, or is there a simpler way (I will come to my question later)...

1) Locate a Win9x boot disk and FDISK drive C, then reboot and format
2) Boot again from A: ensuring CD rom is detected then run A:\SMARTDRV.EXE
3) At the DOS prompt go to C:\I386 and type WINNT
4) Pray that nothing stuffs up such as .....

I have just built a P4 2.4GHz HT computer on an Intel G865 mainboard, 512MbPC3200 RAM and 80Gb100 HDD. All very vanilla, no nasty SCSI cards. No PCI hardware at-all, i.e. onboard video and audio. I tested this on 2 motherboards, and 2 processors. The problem is simple, The XP install goes OK as far as initially copying files required for installation, then, when informed that the MSDOS portion of the setup is complete the PC reboots (first reboot) and just hangs with a flashing * - * cursor in the LH corner. I tried everything to coax the system to continue. Nothing installed on the drive seemed runable ($WIN_NT$.~XX folders etc etc) . The only solution that has worked was to install a compact version of Windows 98, then run setup.exe off the XP CD. All is now well. Any ideas incase this happens again ?

All the best
