unable to install any operating system

I have just bought a new mother board, hard drive, cd rom for computer. Have attepted to install an operating system, (Win98, Win98SE and WinXP), all to no avail. Each time I try both versions of win 98 get through checking the hard drive and then begins to install then after checking system comes up with various "kernel" faults and then says "Installation can no longer proceed" and restarts the computer. When I attempt to run setup again it says that it is going to check the hard drive but just freezes. I then have to turn off the computer, boot with boot disk and try again, but after numerous attempts I still can't install an O/S. When I try to install XP going through "I386" "winnt" the system just freezes. It appears to start the file transfer but then just stops. I have been trying all day to solve this problem but can no longer go on "Bad headache, desire to throw comp out of window, etc". Any advice would be greatly appreciated
