Logical Block Addressing (LBA) error while running scandisk

I have a in Compaq Presario 7470 running Win 98 SE, with a 20gb ATA/66 Ultra DMA hd.  Whenever I reboot, it states the following.

"Scandisk cannot read the last cluster on drive D.  This cluster is either damaged or your system is not configured properly.  Drive D may need to have logical block addressing enabled to work properly ......"

This error didn't appear when I first got the machine.  In scandisk, bad clusters appear starting about 3/4 of the way through the drive.  All scandisk does is mark the area bad.  If I let it run overnight, it would just mark the rest of the drive as bad.  Also If try to copy a file larger than 600 mb to the D drive, the machine will lock solid, since it is trying to write past the safe area on the drive.

I haven't modified the bios, since it worked for the first year.

   Looks like your hard disk is going bad. You should start backing up your data.  Run the manufacture hard disk utility to confirm this. If you know your manufacturer's brand, I can provide a link to the utility.

I agree with war1. You should backup data in the first place. It looks like the disk is starting to fail.

Can you set the disk detection mode from NORMAL or LARGE to LBA in the BIOS? This might (but probably not) be the problem.

I never learn, do I, war1?   ;-)

Compaq BIOS wont give you an option to enable/disable LBA.

your only option is to backup the drive, remove the partitions and run a Full QuickRestore using CTRL-Q procedure. This should help!

Ditto, if you're getting bad cluster errors 3/4 thru the end of your drive, then it is defunct.  Buy a new one, swap it with the old one, & run the recovery cd (full) to reload everything.  Then slave your old drive to the new one & copy all important data (including internet & networking details, email, favorites, my docs, etc) from it to the new one as soon as possible, before those areas are marked as bad too.

I like Maxtore.
Building your own is really a lot easier than most people think. Just, don't expect to save money.

Yes it is a WD, a WD200AA , how did you know. According to WD website, this model and a bunch of others was recalled.  Hope this helps someone else.  

Hard Drive Quality Alert -- WD Caviar


On September 27, 1999, Western Digital announced a recall of a specific group of WD Caviar 6.8 GB per platter 5400 RPM EIDE hard drives manufactured between August 27th and September 24th, 1999. The recall has been successful, and WD has been able to recover over 90% of the hard drives potentially affected by a faulty chip.

The faulty chip affected the 6.8 GB per platter WD Caviar hard drive only, and does not apply to other WD Caviar products, WD Expert, WD Enterprise or WD Performer hard drives.

I just spoke with their warranty dept and they said that as long as I had the serial number of the drive, since it was convered under the recall, they would advance ship me a new one.  

The tech suppt person wasn't aware of the recall however, and couldn't find it on the wdc web site.  Ask them to type in "Caviar recall"  .  

Good luck to all you Presario owners with this lousy drive.  

As long I'm on a roll, what's the deal with those stupid expansion slot plates on the Presario you need to wiggle free by putting a screwdriver in a slot.  Who was the moron who thought of that.  "Stupid is as stupid does..."

How did I know it was a WD? personal experience. I've had two bad WD's. and every horror story I've ever heard it's been a WD. Still waiting to hear my first horror story and have it be some other brand. My advice sell the unopened replacement for cash (ebay or half) and buy something else. Seagate, Maxtore...
